I have a tacoma 2nd gen 2007 4x4 manual trans. I'm towing it on a dolly behind an RV. 300 mile trip planned. I've towed 2wd cars but never my tacoma. I'm sure due to it being a 4x4 and a manual trans there are things I need to do to prevent damage to my truck. Looking for any recommendations. Was not sure if I can just put it in neutral, or if I need to take out the main drive line. I've heard to tow it backwards, but understood the 07 tacoma front 4x4 drive axles always spin and that was a problem in tacoma's of this year. Any help or direction is more than welcome. Thanks everyone

You can't just put it in neutral, as the spinning driveshaft will still be spinning the shafts in the trans, because there's unfortunately no neutral option in the electronic t-case. If the driveshaft spins without the gears turning (without engine rotation the gears stay still) there is no oil being circulated and you'll roast the bearings real quick. That's why the manual specifically prohibits flat and two-wheel dolly towing on these.

I think you should be fine if you drop the rear driveshaft though. either remove it completely or disconnect it from the rear diff and securely hang it out of the way. With the front wheels on a dolly there should be no drivetrain rotation aside from the rear diff which stays lubed on its own.

risethewake is correct. You cannot flat tow a Tacoma, use dollys or disconnect the rear drive shaft.

FWIW I've also heard of quick-disconnect driveshafts that easily engage and disengage without having to remove them, like a splined disconnect. I can't speak to the reliability of them though, and prob easier to just take it out unless you have a need to disconnect it frequently.

Thank you for the replies. I tried to disconnect the rear drive shaft with no luck. Good thing I had a backup plan. In the future I'm just going to load it on a trailer and tow it along. Seams the easiest thing to do.
