Dome light no power unless key ignition is on.

I have an 04 and confirmed no voltage or power is hitting the dome light until I turn on ACC. I know there are several fixes for fixing the dome light by cleaning the terminals. I tried that first then put a voltage meter on it to confirm it's not getting power at the plug(removed light assembly) until ACC is on.

Anyone else have this problem at all?

 

If you have LED bulbs, the system gets wonky! If you are using LED, you need to add a resistor to at least one of the bulbs (either dome, or maps, if you have them)

 

I have this problem too. I had LED's in for a while and the system worked just fine, then one day, just as OP said, only on ACC will the dome light work. I tried switching back to normal light bulb and tried CAN LED bulb (with built in resistor) problem never went away.

 

I did have a non LED bulb and replaced it with a LED originally thinking it was out. So both are doing it.

 

so when you have it set to "door" and open your door you get no power to dome light?

might be something with the "courtesy" light function

 

Correct. Only works when the key is in the ignition and either on acc or the truck is running.

 

What happens if you turn on one of your map lights?

 

Have you tested the door switch sounds like it is no longer working!!

 

I think the door switch is good. It works with ignition on like it’s supposed to.

 

I will have to check. I think those turn on and off like they should.

 

The question would be, do they turn on the dome light (when the dome light isn't on but should be on) when you turn one of the map lights on.

 

Confirmed the map lights work as they should. No key in the ignition and they will turn on. The dome light only works as it should when the key is in the ignition and acc is on or the truck is running.

 

then I concur with @Wyoming09 and @Digiratus that it is the door switch or the dome light housing/switch that is bad

turning the key on in the ignition is it's own function, it sends power based on ACC and will work if the dome light is set to ON. It will not work if it is set to DOOR and the door is closed as it's designed to think you are already in the vehicle and ready to go. It should turn on when you turn off the truck and open the door.

when I set my dome light to DOOR if I unlock with remote or with key, before I even open the door, the dome light comes on

 

I may have not explained it correctly above. It does function as it should only when the ACC is on. Door open: it comes on and when I close the door: it turns off.

That’s telling me the door switch is good and it has to be something else. I’m not an expert mechanic though.

Sounds like the courtesy light timer is not functioning.
The door switch activates the timer which turns light off 30 seconds after closing door with key removed from ignition.

 

Have you confirmed the 15A dome fuse is good?

Power goes from the dome fuse to the Body ECU. The body ECU is what controls when the light comes on.
I have attached the wiring digram from an 03, but it should be the same for 04.

The diagram shows that the Body ECU is powered by the IGN Fuse, so it's possible that you are only getting power to the dome from the IGN circuit and not dome.
I don't have the internal wiring for the Body ECU, but it's worth a check.

I had the same problem- caused by using LED in the Dome light - switched back to incandescent and everything works great now
