Burnt out so I though I could replace it with an LED light.
But it just flickers an then goes out.

Do you mean a LED light or bulb?

I have had good luck with the lights not so much the bulbs though they may have gotten better

LEDs are cool but you may have to use them with resistors

If you just stick an LED in the socket it'll be toast in milliseconds. They need a current limiting resistor.

Yes, but also no. LEDs do not have the ability to set their own current like light bulbs do. They will pass as much current as is flowing in the circuit they are in. If that current is too much, they blow up.

LED bulb assemblies that are designed to plug in as direct replacements for an automotive bulb have a current limiting resistor as part of the assembly. This is separate from a resistor used to fool the flasher into working.

From the sound of OPs post he may br plugging in just a bare LED in place of a bulb, which has no current limiting resistor, and will burn up.

I replaced mine with a much brighter LED years ago. Easy replacement, snap the cover off, and fit the bulb in. The one I got is on the cold side; I would have preferred a warmer one. I can't find the website I ordered from, but type your year and tacoma dome led light into Amazon and you get 7 pages of options. The banner at the top of the product page will tell you if the bulb really fits your year.
