Wrong because they follow the law? ;)

As I posted if you aren't staying for longer than 48 hours you aren't getting through without paying GST/PST and any duty unless the officer you pull up to decides to wave you through. It's happened once to me. If you're getting by more often it's because you are at a busy crossing and they have bigger fish to fry. I cross at a small crossing, well it's the biggest one to Alberta but still small, so I always get pulled it. They are always friendly. I pay my $10 and leave.

Then again my crossing is also extremely busy, relative to the amount of people coming through the crossing, with Calgary folks coming down for packages. I wouldn't doubt that they make more people pay because it looks better on the books.

I did accidentally dodge some duty last time I went through :p. I was in a rush and I forgot that EBC pads are made in England. I never said anything and the guy rang them up under NAFTA.

No, I'm just in the process of getting my PAL so no importing that sort of stuff for me yet. It's usually car parts, household goods, and the odd bit of special protein powder that my wife can't get in Canada.

Well I hope some people from Vancouver chime in. Honestly I thought all border guards had the same instructions. There is clearly a waive through limit here and your calculator is useless as there is no paperwork done. You drive up with your 100 dollar car part. Tell them what it is and the cost, then get waved through into Canada. So I can't "prove" it like you.

The Nexus holders filled in that paper declaration and were charged tax on everything. Formal complaints were made and now no paperwork for Nexus entry into Canada, just oral declaration of goods being brought in.

I feel for you man, you are getting hosed by the tax.

Not really. No PST here so it's just 5%. I can live with that.

This post encapsulates my feelings on this matter because it basically covers what has happened in just a couple of sentences. I'm not a vendor trying to make a living selling items over the Internet. If I were I guarantee I would be much more knowledgeable about electronic transaction laws and procedures. But since I'm only trying to provide a good price on some aftermarket items off my last Tacoma I didn't really feel it would be necessary to earn a Ph.D. on how to prevent getting hosed selling a few items and using PayPal as the funds exchanger.

It has been mentioned I don't have a verified PayPal account, but I, in fact do.

It has also been said this same thing could have happened had I sold to a U.S. citizen. I'll one up that and say the odds are higher it would happen with a U.S. sale. Unfortunately this is the first Canadian I've dealt in the area of an Internet transaction and I only allow myself to get bent over once before I will take extreme measures not to let it happen again.

I did mention the individual is Canadian, but that fact is not at issue here. The way he conducted himself in this transaction is. Since we only have two countries abutting us [U.S.] (unless you live in Alaska and sell to some Russian across the Bering Strait), and both of those countries have actual immigration policies, if you mention someone from either one of those countries you will either be using the word Canadian or Mexican. Using a national identifier for an individual doesn't make you a racist, bigot, or xenophobe, regardless of the propaganda the media spews out.

I have absolutely nothing against Canadians. I'm sure they are all great people. I just won't be dealing with anyone from there over the Internet again. It's that simple.

Maybe I'm miss reading something, the money is pending, you're being charged an extra 1% (so 1.00 dollar), ths buyer has or has not responded to you?

Are you really bitching about a dollar???? Or that the payment is still pending?

As a Canadian that buys stuff from TW members and ships to a US address, I fail to see how this was the buyer's fault. I had no idea international credit cards charged sellers more... the issue is paypal allowing a transaction to proceed without receiving the money, is it not? They can't steal from you and get away with it. Your money will come.

5%. All you pay bringing something across the border is GST which goes to the Feds.

EDIT: If you're talking about where the extra 20-30% goes if I have something shipped direct to my door it actually ends up in the hands of the shipper and/or retailer for handling fees.

EDIT: Oh and as far as the verified account thing does we were talking about verification on the buyers end. Or at least I was.

Plus advising other members not to sell to Canada isn't racist, bigoted, or xenophobic but it is dickish. That's where I was coming from.

Anyone reading this post with half a brain can deduce you are putting forward your own erroneous views. I could care less what YOU think of me. I detest liars and dishonest people. I NEVER advised anyone to not deal with Canadians. That is totally up to them. I, however, will not. So feel free to gallop around on you rocking, high horse some more. I'm sure there are some readers that like reading the crap you spew from your mouth.

I live in Canada about 45 minutes out of Minnesota. Even with a terrible dollar value right now it is usually much cheaper and faster to order products out of the US, most of which aren't even available in Canada or locally. For example, my dealer wanted $700+tax for nerf boards. Amazon.ca wanted $500. I ordered from Amazon.com for $198 USD. Just run across the border to a store that does parcel holding, that's where you ship it to. Point is that there are alot people who do this and it works very well. Don't let one bad customer ruin it for the rest of us! Just change your approach to protect yourself!

    Your thread title is

and you are saying you won't be dealing with Canadians ever again. Most people would link those things together as you advising others not to deal with Canadians. It's not just me who is seeing that here.

Anyways, I can see this has ran it's course. Have fun spreading the butthurt. Americuh.

There are scammers throughout the world not just in Canada, if there was a way to find out all of the real numbers as to how many are here and there, how many in Canada and all the other countries, my guess would be that there is less in Canada but I could be wrong.

There are many ways to protect oneself from being scammed/ripped off what ever one chooses to call it.

I don`t sell much of anything that I buy anymore and when I have in the last 5 years it has been a face to face transaction like Craigslist but with so many incidences on Craigslist where people have been robbed and/or killed my advice is to not go alone and go armed.

I also made the decision long ago that if I did sell anything online, that I would not sell outside the continental USA.

Regardless of how one chooses to protect themselves and their property, it has become evident nowadays that everyone must take some type of precaution when selling and/or making a purchase from an unknown party.
