Bumper support and bumper foam is...

When I took it to carmax for their own inspection the guy started off by saying they check the bumper support for any dents or cracks (starting at the rear as he's touching the rear bumper support)... I told him that the front is cracked, he went to look and confirmed the crack with the manager. it's why they're trying to fix it now.

Like you mentioned previously, could that damage be caused by bottoming out on something hard?

And is there any way to show that was there when you purchased the car and not something you did after purchasing it?

The manager at carmax even said "I can tell you didn't cause the damage to the bumper support because the bumper is still in good condition, so we would like to fix the bumper support for you". His name is Francis...

The bumper support isn't low enough to be affected by bottoming out, even if you pulled the bumper cover it won't crack the aluminum as the clips and bumper cover is plastic.

I would love to see this thread keep going but I feel that even in just a few posts here you're not helping your case.

The case is already pretty solid and everyone involved is aware of everything going on... I had carmax repair the bumper alignment so it's on their records, The lower scrapes were noted as normal wear... When I bought the car, It wasn't sold as is, it had a warranty (still does through extended maxcare). I was told that the car had nothing on its history and that the 125+ point inspection would tell me if it had been in an accident. which turned out not to be the case.

We will see what happens when it goes to court.

If a person bottoms out hard enough to need a new bumper would that not also potentially crack the support?

And while the manager says that, I'd be willing to bet that Carmax's team of lawyers will disagree. It's pretty easy to toss on a new bumper if you mess it up but leave the cracked support behind it.

Would be a big bottom out with potential suspension damage in that case especially for it to have been reported as an accident to the DMV/Carfax. The bumper cover is plastic, held on by a few screws and plastic clips, The bumper cover would tear off before damaging an aluminum bumper support of which is not bolted to the bumper cover at all. the bumper support is attached to the radiator support and is right below the headlights. it's not low enough to hit the ground.

Well yeah, it's pretty believable to say it's been in an accident, I'm just saying that when the person did the original inspection when they were under the impression there had been no accident it's plausible to tech did the same thing you did and attributed the damage to it being a low car.

An accident is only one of many possible explanations for what caused the damage.

Then it would of been repaired under their "CQC" refurbishing process which is part of a 125+ point inspection.

What'd you do to discover the water damage?

So then what they're doing now should be pretty fair. They're saying they missed that and are now offering to fix it correct?

The cracked support doesn't prove an accident so they didn't lie on that front. The carfax was clean at the time of sale. There's no frame damage. There's no water damage.

I get it, you're upset because now you have a car with less value, but blaming Carmax isn't going to help much. I'm sure you aren't the first person to threaten legal action over the same thing. But hey, Carmax is a giant multi million dollar company so it might be quicker and easier for them to settle with you and just be done with it and you'll get lucky.

@GuyWithCamera FYI, if you are planning on taking legal action against CarMax you might want to avoid discussing it on the internet...

Just another case where you really need to get a mechanic to look at what your going to buy, especially if you don't know what to look for.

Dang, I don't know the full story, but I must have been a rare and lucky customer of CarMax. Back in the Spring of 2010 I bought a 2006 Mustang GT Convertible with 16,000 miles on it from them. The car looked and smelled brand new. It was a 1 owner and never had a lien on it. I loved that car. Paid it off in 1.5 years. Then I put on a full suspension with Koni shocks, Borla Exhaust, custom tune, CAI, 4.10 gears, 19" RTR wheels. Drove the hell out of it. I put it back to stock, and sold it back to CarMax in the fall of 2013 with 30,000 miles on it and they gave me $2,000 less than what I originally bought it from them for. Damn near crapped my pants. Took the check and ran straight to the bank before they came to their senses.
