The thing that gets me is the missile would likely hit an engine. And you might think "oh it messed up the wing when it hit then engine, crashed and exploded."

Problem jet fuel tanks are in the wings themselves. That shit would have ignited and left a trail of smoke til impact if not blowing up completely in air. If it did blow up the Burning wreckage would have made several smaller impacts

Missiles like the one that is assumed to bring down the airliner explodes by close proximity, not by direct impact or contact...spraying fragments/shrapnel. Most likely the entire tail section immediately broke away from the rest of the fuselage.

 

Disregard my two cents, I was thinking heat sealing direct impact.
