Don't go to Circuit City

That is too disgusting to imagine and only reinforces the theory “If you want it done right – do it yourself” I really hate it when these places advertize that they have been in business for 50 years (But the person working on your car has been here 2 weeks)

 

Man thats crazy I hope its works out for that guy i would never take anything like that to Circuit City it took them about 20min to figure out what i-pod adapter i wanted

 

We used to have a CC here in Topeka but it was like that too. Anytime I went in there it was dead. After a few years they closed the place. I had to go to Kansas City CC to get my Metra Ipod adapter.

 

I try to do my trading with the local stereo shop guys, keeps the money in the community. I buy his stereo, he takes the money and buys weed from my friend who in turns buys compost from the farmer down the road to plant more weed, see a beautiful circle.

 

The great American way.

 

WTF...That is horrible...I buy electronics form CC (TVs, HomeTheatre, Stand) stuff I can hook up myself, but I would never trust them to install anything...trust me if a skilled electronic tech is looking for a job they wouldn't go to CC because they don't pay well...so the people installing your stereo is probably some kid out of high school who taught himself how to do it...go to a place that specializes in auto electronics.

 

12K damage? Is it just me or is something with this story not quite right? Thinking dealer, screw - well, you get the point (pun intended).

I didn't read the whole thing.... but ... Circuit City is an electronics *store*. I wouldn't trust them to install ANYTHING and especially audio electronics.

Nothing wrong with Circuit City.....but never go in there 'clueless'. Always do research before you talk to their sales people who don't know anything about electronics. But then again...where CAN you find an electronics store that knows their electronics?

Funny...but we went in Circuit city to look at all their TV's on display. Every TV looked like shit!! The signals they were using off cable, were multiplied and made the TV's look like crap. How the hell can you sell an HD TV with such a poor azz signal?

We went to another electronics store - much better picture on all the TV's and much more knowledgable people to talk to.

Circuit city is good for when you know exactly what you want and you can run in there and get it...and install it yourself.

 

I'm betting different stores have different employee issues. Some have better luck than others. I used one to install a receiver in an Exploder - worked out fine. Kid was so proud of his work he wiped down the dash with an armorall wipe before backing it out of the bay. They're not all bad - just have to be cautious.

 

I used to be an installer/assistant mgr. at CC 10 years ago and it really just depends on the location. I can tell you for a fact that you should ask questions first to feel the guys out. Just to see if they know what they are doing. The first one I would ask is if anyone at the shop is Mobile Electronics Certified Professional certified. I don't know how it is now but back when i was installing all the best installers were MECP certified. The guys that were serious about installing and bottom line were good installers were MECP's. The test involved actual electronics knowledge Anyways be smart and ask a lot of questions and that goes for any store whether it be CC, BB, or the local mom and pop store.

same thing happened with my dad. he got a stereo installed at CC and his unit kept overheating. he took it back and they found that they had ran a screw into a pair of speaker wires and it was shorting out all the time. never trust anyone to touch my stuff.

 

I've had to re-do many installs for friends who went to CC and other installers around here who did not know what they were doing...

not using any connectors... just electrical tape...
Cut factory harnesses (plug left in the back zip tied up)

CC isn't my favorite store. All those big cavern type buildings are gonna be a bitch to heat this winter - My vote is with Concrete, Buy Local

 

Just about all links to this story are dead, which makes me grouchy.

Really, trying to get an install done right is tricky - not that the work itself is hard on a basic install, but that it's hard to find a good installer. The old, "fast, cheap, and good, only pick two" really play here, and it's been hard for me to find 'good'. CC, Best Buy, and even some car audio shops can be horrendous. My last installer burnt up two of my buddy's subs, caused me to rewire my keyless entry on my honda, among other things - all in an effort for 'get it in, get it out, get paid'. My last install at Car Toys, a large car stereo chain in my area, didn't do too badly, but I was picking copper out of my carpet for a week.

This next job is going to be between me and the ever-popular Mr. Marv. So what if it takes a few weeks? I want Marv to be unpressured and unhurried when making my box, and I'm going to take all the time I need to run my wires the right way. It may take a bit of education, but it's going to be peace of mind and sonic bliss.
