    Hey man wanna trade hoods?

And gear oil does go bad, I change it at least once a week on trucks and it does not matter if truck sat for a yr or used everyweek it still needs to be changed. And you always have some metal in your fluid.

Working on it brother. Been through hell the past few months, things are working out finally. Own my own company, have a fiancee, finally some money in the bank. Busier than Rosie O'Donnell at a free chocolate bar. Still have Lucy, wrapped her front end around a phone pole a couple months ago but parts are ordered and coming. Looking towards catching up with times here!

I must investigate this so called "Bartstar" person. If he's here and entertaining, he's alright in this boy's book!

Differential and transmission oil don't need changed as often as engine oil, engines deal with combustion by-products and water condensation, but diff and trans oil is also subject to condensation, which won't boil off like in an engine, also oil will slowly oxidize from air exposure, changing its characteristics, so diff and trans and xfer case oil definitely needs changed, at the recommended intervals at least. Wow. A little understanding can be priceless.

It just dawned on me that other than my introduction, I think this is the first thread I've opened...and BartStar was the first to reply!

That has to be bad Karma...I'm gonna seek out some sort of voodoo witch doctor to remove the curse.

thanks chris4x4! its great how you call it out.

changed all my gear and diff oils at 25,000miles and i was surprised at how dark the front oil was and the amount of metal shavings on the rear magnet. I had the rear diff oil changed at 15,000 as well (they prob didnt clean the magnet). its not gonna hurt people and could be the $30 difference that makes your truck reliable.

I did notice the front diff plug does not have the magnet in it. why not?? are the front and back plugs the same size and thread (i think so). so can i just go get one at the auto store for the rear diff and put it in the front.

My front diff drain plug had the magnet; and it was covered in shavings!

Yep! That's how I felt! That's why my next diff (front & rear) oil change will be around 15K.

Please reconsider the front and rear diff! :notsure:

I put mine off until 42K; after looking at the oil color and shavings on the magnets...wish I did it around 30K (bought truck with 23K on the clock).
