Nice detail. Is this the same for 3rd gen?

Late to the conversation, but thought I'd add my $0.02. This does work 99% for the 3rd Gen Taco, but there is one caveat, in the driver door, there is a plug for the "biosensor" for the door locks that has to be unplugged from inside the door panel. So, you do remove the door panel, the plastic cover, and the upper foamy board insert to access the plug for the sensor. There is a funky black plastic clip that you unsnap, then using a small flat blade, unclip the white square plug to release the main door handle.

Great write up and very helpful.

Thread from the dead! I'm about to do this on my 2007, because I bought it with no driver handle or locking mechanism.

Thanks to the OP for a good thread with pics. I found this much more helpful than a 20 minute you-tube video of some hillbilly fumbling around in his windy driveway.

Question: How does one go about getting a replacement lock cylinder to match my keys? Can these be re-keyed? Have to order from dealer? Any help is appreciated!

Wrecking yard, ebay, or the dealer. A locksmith can rekey the lock to match your existing key.

Nice post and been wanting to do this to my door handles. Want to paint them black along with my fender flares and bumpers. They look like they all were color matched to the body paint but have faded and I think black would look good on them. Thanks for the write up...

Reply from the dead: The lock cover pops off the cylinder.
This video shows the Tundra, but the process is the same for the front doors.

Color matched handles make a big difference to me

My mirrors are all already black so I want the rest of it to match them. Probably going to use plastidip so incase I don't like it I can peel it off.

Make sure to use lots of coats or it's really hard to get off

Thanks for the tip. Only one I'm gonna regret to do is the front flares and front bumper cover as they're sort of attached to each other.

I took mine off the truck, and I'm glad I did because they came out really well

Two years later and I’m thinking of actually doing this. Figured out that I’m missing the t30 that holds the inner mounting bracket in place, which is probably why the handle and lock cylinder fell off on the previous owner.

Anyone know the thread pitch and length of that bolt so I can source it at the hardware store instead of the dealer? Anyone know where the metal piece "(Lock Rod" that sticks downward inside the door is supposed to insert? Parts diagram has it going towards the latch but I don't know where or what it looks like. Thanks in advance!
