So here is my problem, when pulling up the outside door handle the lock goes down. This problem started happening when a person I was giving a ride to pulled up the door handle at the same time as I was unlocking the door with the power lock button. After that day it started locking itself when using the outside door handle. I have inspected the rods and what not and can't spot a problem, I even compared it to the driver side which operated the same way. The only thing I could spot was when the door handle is pulled up the rod goes down a little bit further n sets off the lock which goes down, but I don't know what I could adjust for it to stop from going down further... Has anyone had this problem or know a fix for this type of situation? I'm stumped and wanna figure it out!!

I know the factory alarm, when armed, will re-lock the doors if they are opened without using the remote. I think your issue is somewhere with the Toyota security system.

Anyone ever find a solution to this? The drivers door on my '01 does the same thing, I haven't been able to find what causes it.

linkage needs to be lubricated...either spray the chit out of it with a red tube , or take the door cover off and be more precise in your application of the lube! :hattip:

Thank you! I fixed it this afternoon. The linkage was definitely in need of lubrication, but the real problem was a bent arm in the latch, most likely caused by a lack of lubrication. Bent it back, lubed it, works again!

    Thanks!

Hey this is happening to my pass. door in my '03. When you say "bent arm in the latch" are you referring to the button or the handle arm? I was hoping you could be more specific as I don't want to reinvent the wheel. Should the bend be apparent?

    Thanks for support.

Bump! But really, this is frustrating so I’m curious what specifically I’m looking for to fix this.

is that the part the guys above are saying to lubricate? I’ve replaced the outside handle so I’m comfortable taking the door panel off to get in there, but I wasn’t sure what needs to be lubricated.

my symptoms are the same as the guy above; when I lift the outside latch or pull the interior latch, the lock wants to go “down” and then engage the lock before the door can be opened.

no, this is a plastic clip that holds the rod close to the door and prevents it from bending in the middle.

    Hey everyone,

I had this same issue too. Just needed to give it some WD40.

    Here's a quick write up:
I used this YouTube video to take off the door panel. From there I pulled the liner off to expose the door handle and the locking assembly.

    IMG_6188.jpg

I followed the tube that contains the lock rod and it leads to the area with the orange clip. Feel free to reach in there with one hand and then start unlocking/locking the door with the inside lock and you'll feel the mechanical assembly moving.

    IMG_6190.jpg

I got the WD40 and started spraying in that general area ensuring that everything in there got lubrication. I also placed a paper towel to get the residual WD40 that'll be flowing down.

    IMG_6191.jpg

I sprayed other components that moved as well since I was already in there and to hopefully spare any future headache. Once done, test by pulling the outside door handle and hopefully it fixes your issue.

Reassemble once complete and you'll be good to go.

Just in case anyone else comes across this thread. This worked for me as well on an 03 Tacoma. Original passenger door handle broke, replaced with a generic one. Few months later it was increasingly hard to pull. After awhile it got to the point where pulling on the handle a few times would cause the door to lock.

So.. when I replaced the LF outer door handle, I had to also replace the lock cylinder, as it helps hold the assembly in place. The lock cylinder itself was completely destroyed by some random AH who took a drill to the lock while I was parked in front of my work place in the middle of the day. The keyless entry still worked to lock and unlock, but to use the key manually - no can.
Unfortunately during this replacement, several key (pun intended) clips (or “snaps”, as they are officially known) were broken, specifically the miniature duplo-shaped one which holds the rod in place connecting the outside handle to the inside handle.
Ordered replacement “snaps” from dealership; $12.95/ea
    ( part # 69759-20070 ; 69293-12050 ; 69293-12060 in case anyone needs this info bumbai)
And also I would like to stress how crucially important it is to use OE handles. The aftermarket one I wanted to use had a bent metal piece on the back of the handle. Got an OE one from eBay for $20. Good as new.

Good morning all. Happy St. Patrick's day to you! My manual door started locking itself as the outside handle was pulled up. It would open if I turned the key as the handle was raised. Took the panel off per instructions above, and all that it needed was some lube. Happy door now. Easy, cheap fix. My favorite kind! Thank you to the folks who posted how!

I’m just popping in here to say that WD-40 isn’t lube… I’ll let myself out now.
