It’s a 2011 SR5 Access Cab. Recently the open door light started coming on and staying on. Yes, the doors are shut firmly. If I open and slam the passenger door shut, the light will go off, but come back on at the first bump in the road. Just a few minutes ago, I don’t think I drove 5 feet before I hit a bump and the light came on. Has anyone experienced this? Is this something I have to take to a Toyota dealer or can most any shop fix it?

Try pulling the door switch on the lower part of the door jam and testing it for function/sticking using a simple volt-ohm meter.

Same thing is happening to me. Except its gotten to the point where my key fob won’t lock the doors anymore because it thinks one is open.
I think my culprit is my power steps connection is bad.

Do your interior lights come on with the light or just the light?

The switch in the door jam provides a ground when the door is opened which tells the Body ECU to turn on the interior light. So either your switch is defective providing a ground or you have a wire for that switch that is grounding.

I wouldn’t have a clue as to how to do that.

I keep the interior lights in the off position, so I had to experiment to see if the light stays on. It does whether the door open light is on or not and whether the On or Door position is selected.

It’s getting so that the door open light will stay on all the time now. To turn it off, I have to open the passenger door and slam it shut. If I’m parking, it stays off, but if I drive it, it comes right back on.

If someone could provide a photo of what this switch looks like and where it is located, that would help.

Close all the doors. If the button is on press the door lock button on your key fob.
It should sound off that anoying high pitched alarm indicating you are trying to lock the truck with the door open.
Systemstically open and close each door by itself to see which door the alarm stops on. That door may have a sensor thats not working.

The door sensors are little plugs in rubber boots inside the door. My local Autozone had a replacement part I got and tried replacing the sensors with to see if one was broken. You may want to try that.

Also you can try popping that plastic center peice on the floor of the drivers or front passenger side to expose the wiring and mess with it to see if its a short.

Thanks for the photo. I found it between rain drops. The rubber grommet moves around almost like something inside is broken compared to the drivers side. It is raining buckets and I have no place to work on it inside, so I will remove that bolt and see what’s inside when the rain stops. Looks like more than 3-inches in my rain gauge in the last 12 hours. No idea when I will get to this as the rain looks like it’s here to stay for a while. At least the gale force wind has stopped and it’s just vertical rain drops and not horizontal rain as it’s been for 3 days.

Currently having this issue, only when i press my clutch pedal the door ajar light turns off. Do you happen to know where the grounding points are located or where the body ecu is located ?

I think it grounds from the bolt that attaches it to the pillar. Pretty sure there is only one wire that goes into the switch.

Typically the contacts on the switch just wear out. A new switch is cheap on Ebay so just replacing it is a no-brainer.

Same issue here on my 2008 AC, I swapped the sensor out and nothing has changed. I'm really hoping it's an easy fix, I don't want to be chasing wires

Didn't feel like reading everybody else's comments but I do know for a fact that if the rear door is not 100% closed the light will stay on. You can close it and then close the front door and not have the rear door actually be completely closed.
