Anyone know why my door speakers would cut off when I disconnect the tweeters? I bought and installed new speakers with built in tweeters and I don't need the stock tweeters anymore. However, if they aren't connected, the speakers wont work. But if I leave them connected, they work just fine.

Tweeters plugged in create a closed loop in the electrical system is what I'm guessing

That would make sense. If I kept the tweeter wires plugged in but disconnected the actual tweeter from the wires at the tweeter connection point, do you think that would allow my door speakers to work?

Check out this thread, specifically, the two PDF's I posted that have wiring diagrams for the audio system.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...2006-tacoma-access-cab-with-jbl-sound.649516/

In the non-JBL Tacomas the front speaker wiring runs THRU the tweeter to the mid in the door. So, if you disconnect the tweeter you are, in effect, also disconnecting the mid.

I haven't done this personally, but by the looks of it you should disconnect the tweeter then hook the wire coming into the tweeter to your new speakers.

Correct (JBL system wires tweeters the same)
    Edit Feb 17/20
I stand corrected and apologize for being wrong. The JBL system is very different than non-JBL.

The plug attached to tweeter has four wires. Two of the wires are audio signal from your headunit, two are wires leading down to lower speaker. Toyota uses the tweeter to complete the circuit allowing the signal to continue to the lower speaker.

There are different options for tapping the headunit signal when only changing out lower speaker.
Cut off plug, splice the wire
Use a tapping connector that crimps over the wire
Purchase a 4 wire plug adapter

Changing the lower speaker only for a higher wattage it is always wise to bypass the OEM tweeter in my opinion.

Or purchase Kicker Subaru tweeter (plug & play) and change lower speaker and there's lots of component speaker options as well.

    Bottom line
What do you want in sound, volume, quality and price.

Well I already bough coaxials for the front and rear. It is my understanding the these are good replacements for regular tweeters. So all I want to do is remove the tweeters and run the regular speakers.

    Lmfao!!

The mids don't go through the tweeters.

If you cut off the wrap off of the wires between the tweeter and the tweeters plug it'll be very obvious as to what's going on. On my 2006 once I peeled that wrap off it showed 2 red wires tied together and 2 black wires tied together. One pair of those goes to the mid. When the tweeter plug is unplugged you're disconnecting the mid from its input.

But the mids going through the tweeters - no.

And disconnecting the tweeter and installing a 2 way or 3 way in the bottom of the door is a step in the wrong direction...

I never said that the tweeters are replacing the mids. I said my 3 way speakers are replacing the tweeters. That's supposedly what 3 way speakers are designed to do. So if I don't need the tweeters, why do I want my old tweeters still connected?

I didn't mean it actually went THRU the speaker itself somehow but the wiring DOES pass through the tweeter "assembly" or whatever other way you want to describe it. The stereo signal goes into the "tweeter assembly" via 2 pins in that 4 pin connector. Then, the signal for the mid comes out of the "tweeter assembly" via the other two pin and runs down to the mid.

So you're suggesting he keep the factory tweeter AND his new coaxials? What's the reasoning here? The stock tweeter will just be sapping power from the new coaxial if you leave it there. And likely the new coaxial tweeter will sound better anyway. Of course ideally he'd just run a component setup.

You've done what many other owners here have completed on their systems going with coaxials.

    Respectfully everyone has an opinion

I knew what you meant. Hopefully my simple explanation was understandable.

I agree the OEM tweeter will effect the quality if left in the system when changing out for lower coaxials (and yes lots of other speaker options out there).

You built the system for YOU not us.

You were simply wanting some advice from other owners that have done this mod.

Turn it up and enjoy your new sound system

No, I meant don't install 2 or 3 way speakers at all in the front doors. That's a downgrade. Optimal sound is best as high and as far forward as possible. You're trying to create a stage. The higher the frequency the more important it is, that's why the 6x9 woofer is at the bottom of the door and the tweeter is up high and forward. It's not the stock locations that suck, it's all of the stock equipment that sucks.
