I couldn’t get a good line of sight into the recess where it mounts, but I had the same question (why the hell do you have to take off the door panel for this) I thought maybe had something to do with the checker body grabbing more of the structural guts of the door, as opposed to just fastening onto the thin sheet metal. But they could have run female threaded holes into the door same as they did into the cab side. I guess you’d have the issue of not enough space in order for the door to close but they could have made a recess for it.

The last images make it appear that one does not need to peel away the clear plastic cover from the door to access the door stop. Is that true?

Did this a while back, and IIRC, you have to remove those (door panel & plastic film) because the entire unit mounts inside the door, with the arm going out the hole to the front.

I did not have to remove the plastic on either side because you can easily reach the door check through the speaker hole. The speaker comes out easily with 4-5 screws. If you look at the Timmy video he doesn’t remove plastic either since he’s also going through the speaker access hole. The oem plastic is already shaped around the speaker mount as you can see below.

This is a follow-up from my earlier post about using the checker at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09TVG12VP . This unit was about $25, seemed well-made and worked fine. There were no instructions. I lightly lubed the plastic surfaces with silicone grease.

    Notes
    - Yes, as described above, simply remove the speaker to provide access. (I can't comment on the access for rear doors.)
    - I see no reason why these checkers are designed so they can't be replaced from outside the door.
    - Whenever I remove door panels or trim that have clips, I lube the clips with silicone grease (i.e. non-petroleum).
