I don't even torque for oil changes. Going on six years and three Yotas with this system, I'm yet to experience a problem.

(Done all my own changes, including the freebies)

Whenever possible, never buy anything with Dorman, HELP!, or Motormite in the name!

I usually just torque it because I already do the lug nuts while I rotate tires, so I figure why not. As you’ve mentioned though, either way, the plastic housings are plenty tough.

No, I hand tighten, but with a with a 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet. Just don't break out the split beam for oil changes..

I secretly laugh every time I see someone post they removed the glass fiber reinforced nylon housing to install a die cast aluminum housing...because it's stronger

Plastic is utilized for cost and weight, and yes, it's plenty tough.... for a while. The environment it operates in will eventually cause it to deteriorate, not to mention install and removal stress/wear. Aluminum is used in this application because the service life on every front is significantly longer... that info comes right from Toyota.

Been using them for about 6 years now in 2 different Toyota’s that have seen temperature ranges of -40 to 120. Never seen them deteriorate. I also however don’t over-tighten them. While aluminum may be better, the plastic is plenty strong and has proven to be. The few instances in which I’ve seen them broken is because people tighten them far too much or don’t know which way it spins off and actually crack the housing by accidentally tightening it more.

Yup. Aren't there valve covers that're plastic? Oil pans even?
