The only thing that I worry about is the signal strength you’re getting from the flanges. They aren’t machined surfaces, which could cause irregularities in the signal from pulse to pulse. A mag pickup like that needs a set depth from the face of the sensor to the edge of the rotating surface to make the proper a/c voltage. Not saying that it has to be perfect but a feeler gauge and a file would go a long way in making sure that you’re getting a good signal

You are correct about mag sensors like that in general, but in this case we don't care about the irregularities, just as long as there are enough pulses to keep the ecu happy code wise.
Normally these sensors would be mounted in a housing that would not move in relation to the rotor much, but in this case there could be a slight flex so this is more of a as close as you can get it scenario.

Running man, its triggering off the rounded part of the driveshaft flange right underneath the stud/nut (there are 4 rounded parts). you could do it off the nuts, but since when tightened the heads may be at different angles you would have more irregularities in the signal.

If this didn't work, I would have made a slip in metal wheel a few mm thick that goes between the flanges and has larger teeth like inside the trans, but since this worked and I have other projects, I am going to call it good enough for now.
If you want to see what I am saying visually its basically like a crank trigger wheel, which there are plenty of examples on the internet.

got a hilux leather shift knob and samurai transfer case shifter on, looks alot better.

Just wanted to update, still haven't been on the highway but drove the truck around a bunch and no codes at all, not even pending.
Also it seems that cruise control works just fine, and even cancels when you push in the clutch a little if you wire up both clutch switches.
Just be in the right gear before you set it and it seems to work, pretty much how it works in other manual cars.

Success! Yesterday got around to building a bracket for the speed sensor and extending the harness. Drove about 50 miles and no CEL so far. Thanks for the help 2JHilux!

Here is my plug to tranny, which wires do I connect or ground? I have no clue lol helppplpp

Passenger drop... sas? nice looking setup!

I just wanted to update on the last stuff I wrote for rigging up the second VSS to get around the last code.
I found that it would work fine in the city, but when I hit the highway depending on how I drove it would throw a code for gear ratio not matching.
Basically you have to drive it like its an auto, if you are going to downshift then get on the throttle... like you would on an auto.

So if you get on the throttle alot without downshifting (where ecu/trans thinks it should have downshifted), or downshift without getting on the throttle (ecu/trans thinks you didn't downshifting),
it will trip the code and after 2 trips it will light the CEL.

It's annoying, but if you drive it like an auto then the ecu won't pickup on the gear mismatch thing, and this only happened on the highway.

I got tired of dealing with it and found a manual 5vz ecu from a tundra, and have been running that with no codes at all for a bit now.
I would have gotten a tacoma ecu, but everyone wants like $400 for those. what happened to toyota love??? that is a big rip off for an old ecu.

How does one find wiring diagrams specific to the Tundra or different Tacoma years in order to see if the truck harness needs to be repinned?

How can I confirm the service manual I have actually matches my ECU and such?

…besides comparing every pin on the wiring diagram to what is physically connected on my truck?

I don't see the ECU/ECM part numbers in the service manual to confirm the same parts.

Still doesn't answer my question. This PDF you linked (which I have) and the FSM don't show the ECM part/model numbers, so I can't just order one online knowing what the wiring/pinouts are.

You have to go off the number and shape of the ecu plugs as they change from year to year.
If you can stay in the same year range it is more likely to match unless it was a year where they transitioned.
