I didn't see a forum section for this so I figured this was the most appropriate place. I'm currently looking at a new Taco double cab with the TRD Sport and towing package 4x4. Any idea what invoice is on this truck? The sticker price was $31,273 but I was able to take him down to $27k. Does that sound like a decent deal or should I go elsewhere? What are you guys paying for the same optioned truck? The dealer always seems to weasel out of telling me what the invoice is on the truck even though I've asked him repeatedly.

27K out the door? I just paid 27400, but that included all fees and delivery (transport, not driven) to my doorstep - dealership was 5 hours away. I have the trd2 package though, with the fancier audio. My sticker was 31669.

Note the price I paid didnt include tax or license/reg.

Check truecarprice.com (I think) and edmunds for good negotiating numbers. Just be aware mentioning them may anger the salesman a bit... or a lot!

Thanks for the tip Eric! This one had the upgraded audio as well. So yours was basically the same as the one I listed?

That's really helpful man. I'm going to push for an extra grand off the price since it's been on the lot a while. I think I can get it. What do you think?

27K is good. I got them to certify used mine, because it was a dealer driver, 100k warranty, extra care for discounted. 32.5k sticker.

I bought a 09 Tacoma 4x4 double cab short bed TRD Sport with the tow package. I traded in my 08 Prerunner and got $18,000 for it. I had to write a check for $10,600 to get it out the door, tax, plate transfer and everything else.

Just run the numbers. If you know invoice, rebates (this month you should be getting $1500 off) and holdback which I believe is 2% of invoice, you know how low you can go before the dealer is legitimately losing money and wont care to deal with you.

Youll have more luck if the truck you want is actually on the lot - mine wasnt, they had to dealer trade to get me my color I wanted.

Yeah, this one is on the lot. I'm trading in an IS300 that I talked them up to give me 7k for. They originally wanted to give me 5k but that was just unacceptable. I think it's a pretty good deal but I want to see if I can get it a little lower.

Get him to 26 and it should be golden. 27K is good but 26K has bragging rights!

not to many, love it the way it is
I read somewhere that if you times .87 to the sticker price then that is about average of what the dealer will go down to

    31,273 x .87 = 27,207

if you can get them down to .85 then you have got the best deal... 26,582

edit... it all depends on the dealer too and how bad they want to move the vehicle plus how well ou are at negotiating and not settling for less then you want

    Is that a.....CHALLENGE!?!?!

I'll see what I can do. I'm going there tonight to talk some financing stuff. I don't know of any financing specials at the moment but hopefully it's not too terrible.

I got 5% from B of A on a 72 month loan. No fees. I doubt they can do better than that. Shop bank loans before you hit the dealership.

Thanks for the heads up again Eric. I already bank with them so that might be a good option for me.

They offered me a 4.54% on a 60, or a 5.3% on a 72. I said I liked 5 better... put on hold... 5 min later, they agreed. Never hurts to ask.

    The actual answer? "It depends".

You may have to pay a little more if you want a very specific vehicle that's hard to find. I just purchased my Taco a couple weeks ago, and I had some very specific features. The dealer had to locate and retrieve the base with the factory/port options I wanted (no small job) and then install several dealer-installed accesories (tube steps, TRD Cat Back, TRD CAI, Interior Lights, etc).

What did I end up paying for this beast? About $32,900 before tax, fees, title, etc, $34,508.88 out the door. But I had over $5000 in options and accessories added to a truck that was already $31,3-- on the sticker. MSRP completely configured for me was $36,7-- before fees, tax, tags, etc. To get out the door including all ancillary costs at 34.5 was a pretty good deal...the dealer came down almost 11% from sticker after going to a lot of trouble to find a "needle in a haystack" for me.

Ask yourself if the dealer deserves to be treated fairly, and then do your research on what the truck cost them. Then come up with a number than includes their cost plus a fair profit for them. Dealers deserve to make profit - they're in business to make money like the rest of us. But they shouldn't be pulling your pants down.

Go into the dealership with the number in mind that the dealer has to get to or get below for you to buy and have THEM make YOU an offer. If it's not satisfactory, have them try again. If they say they can't go any lower, walk out...if they stop you and offer to try again, give them one more chance, but only one. Don't play the game all night. Make it clear you won't stay for shenanigans.

NEVER MAKE AN OFFER TO A DEALER! ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THIS, THE DEAL CANNOT GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT! The dealer knows your price and will try to haggle up from there. Have a number IN MIND that you are willing to pay if the dealer gets to it, but make THEM give YOU the offers. You may end up well below your "acceptable" price if the dealer really wants the sale and is honest.

As an example, my "acceptable" price for my taco was $33k before tax/fees/etc. This gave the dealer a fair profit of 7%. Had I told the dealer that was my price, I probably would've ended up paying 500 to 1000 more than I did. As it stands, I got under my number by $100. You won't hear me complaining.

Make them think they'll lose the deal...you'll get your 26K price.

Biggest rule of negotiation - first person to say a number loses.

Or, play price is right with em. Reveal some of the numbers... I told one guy it had to start with a 27. But don't go over! Then you bust.

Remember to spay and neuter your pets....

I gave 27 for my 08 4x4 TRD Off Road in July last year. My sticker was just over 31.

Remember the rebates- I assume you guys with military sigs got the military rebate as well, so that's gonna push their numbers further down compared to us civvies.
