I would go with the double cab. I have had both.

    Double cab:
I have a family which is why I went to a double cab, more room makes things easier. Especially with the use of a car seat. I thought the small bed would bother me, but even with a tool box it has been of no hindrance. Granted if you are moving things it will take more trips unless you have a trailer. Also larger ladders hang out the back. One could go with a rack or do what i'm doing and get compact-able tools, which I like because you can stick them in your tool box to secure them. Also there is just a cool factor. I personally think it is one of the best looking double cab short bed trucks on the market. If your buddy wants a family later down the road well, he doesn't have to sell his truck. For now though he can pack 4 of his buddies into the truck, and by buddies I mean girls to go camping. As for the bed space verse camping gear, it all fits you just have to stack it. Plus you only need one tent for the 4 girls he takes camping.

    Ext. Cab:
-A single car seat and all fits in an extended, but my wife didn't like riding in the jump seat. :p The advantage of this size truck would be that it does have a bigger bed for hauling stuff, that is if you don't have a trailer. I did this a bunch when I was younger. I would clean out houses that had bad Tenants in them. It is a lighter truck, not by much but it is. You do get more fast and slightly better fuel mileage. It comes from the factory with a manual option. In all reality us guys only use one of the seats 96% of the time while the other one gets covered in trash or a dog. The other 4% is for hitch hikers and girlfriends in which the jump seats come into play sometimes because of the trash, unless you have used this space for young guy stuff (sub woofers).

All in all the extended cab is good for at least 14 years of your life. Unless you plan on driving your girls car around because the kids don't fit in your truck (even for camping). The double cab is in my opinion the better option because you can have this for your whole life. It serves all purposes except fuel mileage (wish I could have a diesel version). If you want a little more go petal get a supercharger. If you want a manual then swap it. Also because you have the double cab your whole life you can mod the crap out of it and not have to cry when you need to sell all your hard work for more cab space later down the road.

I've owned both. Loved the extra cab, but that was before I had kids. Now with two kids, 4 doors is a must. Personally, I like the looks of the extra cab better (seems more proportional), but it's all about what you need. Sounds like your friend only needs an extra cab.

Same basic shit everybody else had 5 years ago.
I have an 03 DC and my dad has a 04 AC. I love the DC and hope I never have to part with it but I do enjoy driving his truck when I visit home and don't bring my DC. As mentioned in previous posts I do enjoy the manual transmission and the longer bed but feel cramped inside and hate digging for stuff I threw in the back behind the seats. With that I already have dibbs on it when he buys a new truck!

I think it is personal preference for your needs........my needs called for a DC due to family more than bed size, plus I threw a topper on it and am able to still load up the bed.

    I own both..literally..right now. A 96 extended can and 03 double cab.

The goal of the truck should be the biggest factor.

For a work/toy kinda truck. Extended cab

For basic rec/dd basic truck. Double cab.

I say this because I love having my double cab in the city for security and hauling people.

The extended cab can haul more in the bed so for a work/utility hads down better and hauls more gear back there for camping(for me)

Also it's noted that double cabs only come with auto transmissions. If he wants a manual..shit outa luck.

Exactly why I bought an extra-cab its not a daily driver or a family wagon its a toy to mod and going 4wheeling. For me a manual is much better for wheeling also..

For me the x-cab is the best fit. 95% of the time I use the truck for commuting, the space behind the seat is useful for secure storage and the longer bed comes in handy when hauling stuff.
Never realized the double cab only came in auto:confused:

i've had both. currently have an Xtra Cab.
i def miss the convenience of the extra room in the back seat. Horizontal dancing in the back seat of a DC is a lot easier than an Xtra Cab.
Not to mention, here in SoCal(HELL), its pretty rare to see 1st gen DC 4x4s running around

I love my DC except the fact it's a auto, bedspace is fine for my use (hauling a ATV, going hunting), and the back seat is big enough and easy access to throw guns in the back seat instead of the bed.

I have a second generation But I gotta say the double cab is nice since I can put stuff in the back seat when I need to. Since I usually am the only one in it I wish I had gotten an access cab but when it comes down to it I have the seats in case friends tag along or my dog wants to stretch out in the back.

I would love a double cab
    ...IF it had a long-bed
And I didn't know they didn't come in manual; that's another deal breaker for me

I'll keep my Xtra cab, then

So guys, I was just thinking, wouldn't a manual tranny swap in a DC be fairly simple... as far as tranny swaps go?

To me the DC is so much more versatile with the back seat. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I MUCH prefer the DC over the xtracab.

Also, I don't get all the complaining about the auto trans. Even with stock gears and 33's I don't feel like my truck is underpowered. Pulls my trailer fine and it is Sooo much smoother crawling in the rocks with the auto (unless you have a crawlbox with your manual.).

    To each his own.
