Just found out the hard way that you should double check your license plate number to your registration card.

I bought my car in April 2019. When I received the registration and plates in the mail I assumed it was all correct so I just slapped the plates onto the car and placed the card into my glove box. Today, I got pulled over, handcuffed, and placed into the back of a squad car for about an hour because the police thought my car and/or plates were stolen. Come to find out the plate # was one digit off and coming back registered to a Dodge Ram. Luckily, the outcome was confiscated plates and a couple hours wasted. The officers were very professional and courteous considering the circumstances.

Now I'm trying to get a hold of the DMV or someone at the dealership I purchased the car at to trace back where the mixup happened and fix the issue.

Not gonna lie, I was freaking out in my head a bit when they told me to get out of the car and to put my hands behind my back and cuffed me. I've never been in trouble with the law and thought I was being arrested knowing I did absolutely nothing wrong. Being told I was only being detained and not arrested didn't help much as that was the first I'd ever had cuffs put on me.

I think it was more the thought of possibly being arrested for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Honestly, I don't think the officers even found out how/why the mix up happened. When the sergeant got there I explained to him the story and he seemed to believe me. They even got a detective on the phone and consulted with him/her. After some deliberation among themselves they cut me loose. Wonder what would have happened if they didn't believe my story.

Yeah, I completely understand. A bit excessive for sure, but I guess they have their own logic and rules. That really sucks that happened. Glad you got out and bummer for the hassle to have to go through fixing someone else's mistake and being arrested due to that mistake.

Probably. Looking back, I can't believe I've been driving around for nearly a year and a half and this is the first time this has happened.

I'm sure you just mis-typed, but I want to be clear I was not arrested. Just detained.

Under the circumstances, I could understand the procedures the officers took.

    You are correct.

I just think anytime handcuffs come one... but yes, as far as the process goes and the variables of, just detained.

From what I remember, I used the info on the renewal letter to go online to renew my registration. All the paperwork has the correct info and I didn't cross reference them to the plates. Bonehead move I guess.

Had that happen to me once when I was 16 4 cop cars a helicopter stopped in the middle of road . They acted like I just escaped from prison . Long story short thrown in the back of a squad car interrogated and released to folks 2 hours later after finding out someone stole my plates . Lol fun day

Yeah, they mentioned that’s how it normally would have went down. Guns drawn and have me exit the car and lay on the ground before they cuffed me. For some reason (maybe because of all the things happening now) they didn’t do that. Wouldn’t have been fun laying on the hot concrete today.

I got pulled over for the same thing a few years back. My plate ended with an A, they fat fingered my registration with an S.
Showed the cop my registration that was only one letter off, the VIN matched the reg as well as with the insurance card as well as all my info so he just said ‘get it fixed Monday’ and off I went..
Where tf do you guys live where theyre doing that crap?

Similar mix up when I bought my truck, fortunately the dealer caught it a few days later, so no traffic stop.
