Installed a pioneer AVH-290BT ($154) + Geri rear backup camera ($16.99) on my 1999. Woke up my sound big time, got bluetooth connectivity and a rearbackup camera. Super easy mod and well worth the $175 spent.

I have that same hu in my 2nd gen and it is awesome. The screen will tilt up and it has about 8 different preset locations. I wish it would tilt the other way because in my truck it is much higher. The only complaint I have is that it takes about 40 seconds to boot up and start playing music when you turn it on. The back up camera will work immediately though. The newer model DDX-9703S has a faster boot time and a glossier screen that is easier to read in sunlight.

Too much IMO. It's an easy DIY. Buy an adapter harness, a few screws to get the dash off and the old one out, then reverse the process. If you go with camera, that takes a bit of time, but nothing hard about that, just getting the cables run to the unit. YMMV

Not enough to have a build thread.
So I hope I'm not threadjscking too much as I believe this is somewhat relating to the OP, but has anyone found d a decent double din for cheap? Like some Ebay Amazon $100 cheapo? I have an older pioneer, but it doesnt have bluetooth and my aux cord jack in my phone is started to loosen up, so I'm considering swapping out my deck.

How much did you pay for that one? And was it hard to hook up?

I'm late, but I have to say that is a very nice non-touchscreen double din!

There's no dash kit specifically for our Tacomas, the double dins or any radio in general sit flush with the trim piece and the factory mounting brackets fit with any aftermarket radio. Unless you getting a single din I'm not sure which kit it is.

I also put a Kenwood in mine. Used the brackets off the OEM radio. Love it! Has apple car play, usb port for charging, bluetooth. Best part is you can adjust the angle of the screen so its a rarity that I get glare. I also put Velcro on the microphone behind the vents so you cant see it. Works perfect with Siri. Definitely worth the couple hundred I spent. I needed an adapter harness though. It was like $5 bucks on Amazon. Best buy wanted about $15.

Tell us more about that embossed cover. Security by obscurity? Where did you find that?

Yes sir! Don’t want people looking in the window seeing a nice kenwood that needs a new home. Also figured it would keep the unit in better condition since I park outside in the sun. @Sky_Hawk25 3d printed it up. Just used some Velcro to get it to stay put. When driving I just take it off and place it in the door pocket.

Some hack job in 2011 installed a crappy single din and ditched the OE bracket. I have to use one of the multi car kits I guess, just looking to see if the later years with the stock dd radios had a different bracket

I used a kenwood double din for my head unit, great especially for $110-120. Controls the 2 12”s in the back perfectly.

First off, 2x12? In a truck cab! That’s maybe overkill? But I already know what headunit I’m looking at alpines ilx series, it’s about securing it to the dash I’m concerned about. I’ve learned that lesson on previous cars. Go around turns fast without a dash cage and your expensive headunit heads latterly in a hurry.
