There is no guarantee that any of this will work but here are the things that I do to reduce the risk of stupid people:

    1. Find end spots. Immediately reduces your chances by 50%. End spots in the back of the lots or on the sides of the buildings where most people dont want to walk from are obviously the best.
    2. Really hug the curb or the line on the end spot. This gives you *that* much more room in case they flail their door open like an oblivious douche
    3. Avoid parking next to a vehicle with a child's seat in it. Ever seen a mom with a bunch of shopping bags trying to get their kid situated? You know the ones that basically rest their door on the car next to them to squeeze their kid into the car. Dont park there.
    4. If you have to parallel park, try to hit the end spots. If you can't, hedge towards the more expensive vehicle and/or avoid the vehicle with obvious bumper marks (that are an indication that they use their bumper to get in and out of parallel spots frequently).
    5. If you have to park between two cars in a regular lot because you can't avoid it, find a spot where you are in between two passenger sides and/or hedge towards the passenger side of one of the other vehicles. 100% of cars will have a driver get in/out. Most don't have passengers. Its a numbers game really.
    6. Adding to #5 -- if you have the option, pick nicer cars to park between. Any car that has a handicap placard or is an "old persons" car is a no-go.
    7. Don't park downhill of a car. Gravity can sneak up on the best of us. You dont want someone to accidentally lose grip of their door and have gravity slam it into your vehicle.

This sounds like a lot to consider when its all typed out but it takes about half a second for you to run through this "checklist" and it becomes second nature.

My coworker and I park next to each other at work in a parking garage. Whoever gets their first parks in an end spot --basically over the line -- on the second to last floor. No one wants to walk up or down 4 flights of stairs so its usually fairly empty. Then, whoever is next, parks right on the line next to the first car.

Just to add to the gravity one. Avoid being on the downhill side of a TJ (or older)wrangler or worse. Especially the passenger side. Those doors fly out with just a strap to keep them from over extending. Many passengers riding in them are not aware and let the door fly out. Having owned one my self, I steer clear of Peking near them.

I call BS on this. Parking etiquette is similar to public urinal etiquette. Never park (or stand) directly next to another if there is significant space available.

Lucky for me I have the factory cast aluminum running boards, no door dings for me but it’ll make a nice mark on their door.

853D5F75-937F-4423-AC68-E077A5A24535.jpg I’m OCD about my vehicles as well....but....it’s just a car. I seek out the lowest probability of door dings and park. I’ve spent some serious coin on these depreciation assets!

    Yes.
Saw a brand new Porsche gt3rs I think it’s called parked right in front of a business yesterday taking up 2 spots. Park far away it’s the best way to not draw attention

I won’t park like an asshole by taking up two spots. That is a dick move no matter how you slice it. But what I do whenever possible is park away from everyone and try to find a spot on an end that at least isn’t bordered by other spots on both sides.

I don't see a point in taking up more than one space, if anything you're going to attract unwanted attention. I stick to the outskirts and park normally. Girlfriend used to think I was nuts until she got a car she cared about, then it all made sense.

    Yes.
Mine constantly complains about the long walks into the grocery store just because I park in the back. I think now I’ll sacrifice a ding on my door instead of hearing the complaints

I’ve never lived in a place that was so bad when it comes to this stuff. I racked up more dings and dents from parking lots in three years living here than I had from every other place I’ve ever lived combined. There seems to be an “I don’t give a shit” culture here when it comes to someone else’s property at a level I’ve never witnessed before. They drive the same way. As if no one else exists...

Drop her at the front and park in peace. She can get a head start on shopping that way too.
