I am wondering about the double electrode plugs vs the other style on my truck. I bought NGK ruthenium and the parts site said they will fit. And then i notice a sticker that says its imperative to use the double prong type

Use what the owners manual lists in the back.

Check your Owner's Manual for the recommended spark plugs.

I know my '06 doesn't require plugs of that nature.

    Interesting.....

Ask, then ignore based on a sticker.

Ok.....I just dug around on RockAuto for you.

The 3.4 L uses a double electrode plug.

I suggest you find an Owner's Manual. It will have much information about fluids, spark plugs, towing, operation of the truck.........
I'll wager the local Toyota dealer could supply a manual or dig around on the internet for a downloadable PDF version.

Sometimes its simpler to give them a fish instead of teaching them how to fish.

You don't need to use double prong with platinum and above. Double electrode is to extend the service life of traditional spark plugs due to the high intensity coil packs Toyota put on these trucks from the factory.

Just ensure spark gap is correct, and check life every 20k miles or so.

That said, if they somehow offer the upgraded plugs in double electrode, go for it.

Extremely important that the right spark plug be used. If your truck has been running fine and this is just preventative pull one plug and use the same as installed. Also you could post information on your truck, including model, transmission, engine, etc, and perhaps someone with the same can be of help. Good luck! Woodcutter

    2000 taco. 3.4l 5fvze. 5 speed manual trans. 4 wheel drive.

Every site i look at, including rock auto, has both types of plug at a .044 gap.

I was hoping it was a performance thing with the double electrode so i went with the ruthenium ultra premium plugs, from rock auto.
I looked up those part numbers and both style show up.

There's a reason Toyota put that sticker there.

Plug gap on the v6 is 0.043"

The reason for double is that the spark will alternate between the two electrodes and wear them evenly, given what I previously said. It has nothing to do with performance. Most people here are OEM purists; if pappy says it, don't question it.

If you look the 3.4 has only 3 coils on one side with wires going over the the other side. That engine fires a spark on the compression stroke and also to the corresponding cylinder at the exhaust stroke. It’s considered a wasted spark engine. Because it fires twice as often it uses a double electrode plug. The spark will fire on the closest electrode then switch to the other one when it wears. Technically you could use single electrode plugs but you’d have to change then twice as often.

Ah i see. That makes sense. I bought the "ultra premium" version that are supposed to last 100,000 miles so time will tell.

    Thanks again y'all

    Starts up alot quicker now
