When driving at night, I see what appears to be two sets of any lightsource in my windshield (headlights, streetlights, brakelights, etc). There appears to be a ghost image of the actual light hovering just above and to the right of whatever light source I look at. This is with a very clean windshield - interior and exterior. It is not noticeable in the daytime.

I am pretty tall and do sit with the seat pretty vertical, so I tend to be looking out from near the top of the windshield. When I crouch down and look more through the middle of the windshield I don't notice the issue. It also doesn't seem to exist in the side windows or rear windows.

The only reason I bring this up is because I just started noticing it this winter. I've had the truck for almost two years now and done plenty of night driving previously. Is there some known issue with the windshield developing refraction issues...or is this normal... or am I just crazy? I've never noticed it on any other vehicle I've had.

    Anyone else notice this?

my 2nd gen tacoma's windshield got smoked from age after 8 years. Had the haze and artifacts at night in the window. Had it replaced. Sounds similar issue but can't be from age.

Dumb question, sorry, is it clean? Like clean clean?

Did you put some chemical on it and it marred the glass?

Not to be a smart@$$ here -- have you had an eye exam lately?

As we get older our vision can change quite rapidly, sometimes just from age and other times signaling a problem.

This is an excellent point. This could be from newly developed astigmatism. Especially considering you said the windshield is clean and you never noticed this previously.

Do your eyes every feel scratchy or itchy? Noticed any changes in visual acuity? If you close one eye, does the double image go away?

Anyway, don't answer on here, but I would suspect a new issue with you over an issue with the windshield. Optically, a single lenses (the windshield) should not be able to create two images (to my limited knowledge of optics). Though a reflection could (such as a reflection off the hood).

pinch you fingers together so only a tiny pinhole exists and look through it and see if it clear things up. Do you notice words on the TV screen slighly blurred or ghosted? do that test, and if it clears up, you should see the eye doc.

Hey guys...I have had an eye exam recently. Didn't take it as a smartass question because I thought of that too but....that isn't it. Also I drive a lot at night for work in another vehicle and I don't observe this in that car.

It is a very clean windshield...maybe too clean...I did use a magic eraser on it once to get rid of some hard water stains...could this have damaged the glass somehow? I'm still hung up on how I only observe it in the upper 1/3 of the windshield.

I've noticed the same thing looking through mine...it's not all the time though. While I have a feeling my issue is my eyes and not the windshield, I'll have try looking through the top of the windshield vs the middle to see if it's the same as yours

The windshields are softer than one would expect. It doesn't take a diamond to scratch it. So maybe your eraser did do something.

But you may have bad glass. I got a replacement windshield once (different vehicle) that was made in "another country" and it had a flaw so severe it gave three other drivers vertigo. (I could look around the flawed spot.) USAA covered a replacement after only a couple of weeks. See if anyone else observes what you're reporting. They should sit at the same height and same spot as you do, obviously.

OP this caught my eye I don't have the info on hand but check out light refraction through curved glass might be in the right direction

My eyes start doing all kinds of weird things after eating certain kinds of mushrooms. Especially when I'm driving. I think that I might be allergic.

    This’ll ghost a windshield.
RainX and all those other ‘water repellant’ type gimmick washer fluids/applications/wipers will ghost a windshield.
    Wax will ghost a windshield.

Try some vinegar/water mix and clean the windshield again to get anything the magic eraser left behind. Switch to regular windshield washer fluid if you’re using the gimmick stuff. Don’t use wax on the windshield either.
People will argue these points — until they’re driving during a rainy/snowy night wondering why their visibly it utter shite and the wipers are streaking.

    Yeah
+1 for water/vinegar mix, I keep a bottle of it in my garage and clean all the glass every week or so. The wax / shine crap in regular windshield washer fluid builds up quickly so use the vinegar solution to knock it down.
