So I may be planning an engine swap into a second gen and have been curious on the ecu and what kind of wiring has to be done. What did you have to do to the tacoma ecu? What exactly is it still being used for sense it isn't controlling an engine anymore.

I left it in and plugged in minus the engine harness which is also the transmission. That is pretty much it. Have to get a starter signal the rest is controlled through the ecu you choose to control your engine and transmission unless manual or non electronic trans

Well that's simple enough. So the 4wd, vcs, systems do not have a relationship with the ecu?

Mine is just rear wheel. If trying to keep it 4x4 there is a way but kinda a pain. Strip the harness to have the front diff. And transfer case actuator plugged in. You have to remove the transfer case actuator and mount it so it can still operate. When you put it in 4x4 it will engage the front diff because it sees the actuator has moved into 4x4 .Now the transfer case you choose will either be manual or electronic . recommend manual alot easier.

If it's a different engine the trans and transfer case will all have to match up.

Doing research and planning for a volkswagon ALH TDI. Mate the r155f (2tr-fe manual trans) to it with an adapter plate an then use the fj cruiser t-case (which I just looked up and would probably be the easiest solution). Rock solid toys even tells you how to hook up a switch to activate the ADD.

I was reading somewhere months ago that the R155 is pretty much same thing as AR-15, so it'll bolt up to a lot of other stuff

    Edit:
basically Aisin used same housing but changed up a couple gears within to meet whatever car manufacturer wanted
