Dude, stop preaching about the stupid videos. If you have nothing to hide and you're an upstanding citizen, there should never be a reason to not answer a cops questions..

Answered your own question. He didn't answer because he doesn't have to. Clearly he's standing on principle here because it would have been faster and easier to simply say, "No" and get on down the road.

But why.. What did he accomplish by not answering..? If he feels like the man now, more power to him. Just out of curiosity, if you were put in the same situation, you wouldn't answer as well?

Having nothing to hide and the police questioning you about your lack of things to hide are not the same thing.

I may not be carrying a huge joint and 2 grams of meth in my purse, but that doesn't mean I'm going to dump it out for the cops to see that I don't have those items. It's their responsibility to find probable cause, and if they can't I don't have to share. And in fact it's much smarter not to.

I've been stopped at many DUI checkpoints. I simply answer and drive on, it's quicker and easier. But that doesn't mean I have to. And clearly he wanted to prove a point.

    Yes.

He wanted to prove a point. With a video camera. While asking for the officers' names and ID numbers. He was obviously trying to prove (or instigate) something. Kudos to the cops.

Okay, your not questioning his rights. Fair enough. However, questioning "why he wouldn't answer a simple question" is sorta questioning his rights. He did not have to answer the question, and by default he does not need to give a reason why either...because giving a reason could also be used agaist him. I know that sounds like "double talk" but there really is no other way to word that.

There is an old saying..."place a frog is boiling water and he will know it right away and jump out. Place him is water and bring the temperature up slowly and he will boil to death". Basically, widdle away our right slowly alittle at a time, and we wont know or protest it. It's simple fear that keeps people in line; fear of being in "bigger" trouble. But if people truely know the laws (or anything for that matter) it becomes very hard for someone else to control us and make us their "puppet". Yeah I know that sounds a little dramtic, but again not sure how else to word it.

You said your "not a fan of people who make problems for no reason", but what may seem like no reason to you, may infact be a big reason to him.

When this country was first found, I'm sure the English said "their starting trouble for no reason", but our founding fathers did not see it that way.

Don't forget, this country was founded on the grounds of treason (the Eglishes point of view, as well as what they did was a text book deffinition of it), and on the grounds of the defence of "rights".

I hate drunks on the road and as a police officer, I've been to my share of horrific fatality accidents, but I do not believe in the use of DUI checkpoints. BTW, I think the guy could have handled himself better but I do appreciate and support his actions as a liberty-loving sovereign citizen. Just my opinion.

My guess is this is a person who has had contact with law enforcement in the past, most likely negative, who has just decided he "hates cops" and is going to give them a hard time and attempt to instigate something. I've dealt with idiots like this before, and I'm sure to meet a thousand more. Want to be on your way without any problems? Answer the damn question, make it easy on yourself, and move on down the road. Simple. But, he does have the right to refuse to answer questions. So if he chooses to go that route, he can expect the police to be at least suspicious. If I didn't see any signs of alcohol consumption (red eyes, flushed appearance, smell of alcohol, etc), I'd send him on his way.

So you support the police officers' right to be dicks by pulling him out of the car and perform a sobriety test on someone who clearly wasn't intoxicated, but you don't support the citizen's right to be a dick by not answering? What are your criteria for choosing who gets to be a douchbag?

Just because I support this guy's right to not answer doesn't mean I think it's appropriate in this situation. This is where at least skimming the thread might have helped you, since I have said a couple times now that I think he's an asshat for handling it in a douchey way, but I still support his right to do it.

That's what I mentioned earlier (but it was way, way back) that he was clearly looking for a confrontation, rolling up to the checkpoint and asking for badge numbers. And I think the cops did a great job here.

The Constitution was written before DUI checkpoints existed. It has no relevance to DUI checkpoints.

This video is shocking to most people because they have been conditioned to submitt to unconstitutional government.
The driver of the vehicle asserted his constitutional rights and the police respected them.
Every America should love this guy.
There used to be a time in America where constitutional rights were a good thing.
You can call this man a "douche" but then I would ask YOU what rights YOU are willing to forfeit ?
Everyday in America we lose more and more freedom and liberty and constitutional protections from government.
This man is a hero. The fact that so many people ridicule and criticize him makes the big government tyrants very happy. They have convinced so many of you that submission is the best way to live life.

What rights am I willing to forfeit? I'm willing to (apparently) forfeit my rights to tell a cop at a DUI checkpoint that I haven't been drinking. Big fucking deal right?!

But it's still better not to answer, rights-wise. I got stopped once by a couple cops who were 100% convinced I was carrying drugs. And I tried to be cooperative and allowed them to search both my car and my purse. Right, I have nothing to hide. Well, guess what? I had a couple Advil pills in my purse (dangerous substance there, quite the party drug) and that clown decided he wanted to take me to jail because they were in the pocket of my purse rather than in their original container.

Is having Advil a crime? No. But having Advil (clearly labeled Advil, right there on the pill) outside of its bottle is a jailable offense. Luckily the officer's boss arrived and basically told the guy he was being a dick and let me go with a reminder that I should probably put that in its bottle. But... damn. That's the last time I consent to a search, whether I have something to hide or not. You can do something completely innocent and have no idea that you can go to jail for it.
