There's plenty of other officers available to respond to those calls, it's not like the entire police force is operating one checkpoint.

What he was saying was, cops shouldn't have to be out running check points because as a society we should know better than to be driving drunk. Or atleast that is the way I read it.

Yes, society should know better, but people still do it anyways.

    Bingo!

Tell that to the 1400+ people arrested for DUI's last labor day here in AZ......that were caught in check points. :)

You may think so, but just like the military, many PD's are having to down size due to the economies of the states. I've read some PD's are down by 50%....

I am not quite sure if you are arguing that

    a.) checkpoints are stupid

    or

b.) it's stupid that they have to have checkpoints, but they do

That's 1,400 drunk people off the roads, potentially saving a lot of people's lives. ;)

Yeah you're right their job is to protect and serve. I find it beyond hilarious someone is actually arguing this ridiculous shit. I actually completely agree with you but for 100% different reasons. The cops SHOULD be going out and catching the lunatics commiting real crimes, such as raping, killing, stealing, etc. But it's not our society's fault that's not happening. Police aren't throwing resources into that because that's not how they get paid, not because they're so preoccupied babysitting us shitty ass citizens. Not a day goes by I don't see at least 1 cop parked behind a building with his lights off waiting to snag someone for going 6 over. Way to protect and serve, real tax dollars at work.

EDIT : DISCLAIMER YES I KNOW NOT ALL COPS ARE THE DEVIL AND NOT ALL DO THIS JUST MAKING A POINT!

Well, it's 1,400 who blew over the state-mandated BAC level and were charged with DUI.

What I'm trying to say is that there is no legal distinction between someone who drinks too much and gets pulled over for swerving all over the road and someone who drives perfectly fine with no error or endangerment after 2 beers and gets routed through a checkpoint- but who cares about that stupid shit.
