Has anyone else experienced this: Going downhill, a steep hill, but still on a State road, I touch the breaks to slow down and the engine revs from under 1,000 rpms to about 3,500 rpms. This is in an auto 6 cylinder, 3.5, 2017 Tacoma. She also seems slow to down shift when going up a hill, but I have mainly coincided that just the difference between a V8 manual (my old truck) and (this) a 6 auto. Thanks.

Its so you dont have to ride your brakes and overheat them. Its normal.

Okay Lunabird, I thought maybe so too, but it seemed such an extreme change in the rpms and was so loud I wanted to ask. Thanks.

It's engine braking for you. Normal and preferred operation.

It’s actually fuel cut when this happens. It puts the truck into a certain rpm and completely shuts off fuel to get the best gas mileage. But mostly it just feels like engine braking which is also a good feature.

Shipwreck, I guess the dealership should mention it. It makes sense, but it is disconcerting at the time.

Yep. Totally normal. You should be driving it with the shifter for engine braking anyway.

Save brakes. Doesn't hurt a thing.

actually brakes are cheaper to replace than a transmission that isn't built for transmission braking.

edit: I should rephrase that to explain. normal day to day usage you should use your brakes as pads are cheaper to replace than constantly putting undue load on a transmission.

Sorry NoDak. Been putting "Undue Load" on my Tacos for 14+ years now with no complaints. Changed front pads on my 2nd gen at 100k and the brake guy said the rears still looked brand new. Tranny was fine too. I drive my Tacos in "MT Mode" as much as possible. It's way more efficient especially with the 3rd gen Engine/ trans combo.

    What ever makes you happy.

If it's slippery/icy, you shouldn't be driving so fast. Slow down and the system won't kick in.

With an 18 weeler at your back on the north road slow down is not always the right solution. I just wish i can stop it to brake by itself.
