My 2021 TRD OR has 1800 miles and it cannot hold the highest gear on flat ground with no load. On normal acceleration to 70, it will shift through all gears and into 6th (below 2000rpm), stay there for a few seconds and then downshift (or TC lockup?) and run above 2000rpm indefinitely.

Other times will stay stead in 5th above 2000rpm, and then after 5 minutes or so, shift into 6th and the rpms will hover under 2000.

Does anyone else share this issue? Since my truck is a 2021, I believe it has the latest transmission programming from the latest TSB.......assuming.

Seems normal. Or it's still learning your driving style. Or get a tune.

Did you change tire size already?

Sometimes a good headwind will make it hunt between 5th and 6th.

I’ve experienced the same issue. However in my case the cruise control
is activated when this occurs. I’ve rented two Tacomas as well (one for cylinder and the other the V-6) and both exhibited the same tendency to gear hunt.

I’ve learned it to be normal on this engine and trans. I’ve been on flat ground and had wind cause it to downshift. Mine downshifts going up the other side of freeway underpasses. It is annoying and a reason people get tunes. I think the trans tune Toyota uses has some shortcomings.

ive also notice it rushes to shift through the gears just on surface streets getting up to 45mph. Hear is what I mean, I will give it “X” throttle that allows me to leave the light at the same rate as everyone else. As it shifts through the gears all of a sudden it’s like I’ve lost power and now accelerating slower than others. It seems to short shift 4th to 5th and falls out of the power band.

I’m only at 2600 miles but the more I drive the truck the more it annoys me. My 09 TRD Sport was more pleasurable to drive.
