I found a local shop who has DPMS AR15's in stock..Never looked into them, are they any good? I'm having a toss up between the Smith and wesson sport, and this DPMS..Not sure on the model, but I believe its a "base model"

    Thoughts?:)

DPMS is ok. If the money is the same I'd go with the Smith and Wesson.

If you want a quality rifle, you'll have to spend several hundred more on a couple of other brands.

I have shot roughly 1500 rounds out of my DPMS and with liberal cleaning after using I find it is up with the same quality as Rock River and Stag which I own 2 RR's and a Stag. They are good guns.

Yep, money is the same..He will sell either one to me, for $640. Brand new, never shot, still in the box. I can add accessories for 10% off as well, since I bought my 9MM from them earlier this year.

The only difference between the two, is the DPMS has forward assist, and the dust cover..The smith does not.

$640 is a reasonable price for NIB

Mine came assembled with a parascoping stock, upper, and lower reciever, 16" barrel, a strap and 2 mags, I don't remember how much I paid I think it was close to $1,000 with taxes.

Oh..yea, it comes ready to shoot for that price..I will add a scope on tho.

I'm hoping tomorrow to pick up my new safe:D

The only thing is NJ laws say you can't have an adjustable stock...They come into this dealer "pinned".

The one I held, looked more like the one on the far right. The stock was pinned all the way out. It was actually more comfortable then the S&W.

I think that's actually my Stag. That picture is kind of old and I haven't took any new ones lately. They all feel similar when holding them, I think the main difference (in feel) is when you fire a round and it ejects the shell and slams the slide back just feels nice and sturdy with the DPMS but I could unload 100 rounds in under a minute or so with the rock river (I wouldn't suggest) and not worry about the barrel warping.

That's because the one in the middle is a "AR pistol" Short barrel, no "stock" but that thing hanging off the back end is the recoil buffer tube.

If you put a stock on that, you will have to fill out the NFA paper work and pay your $200 tax stamp, and are illegal in NJ anyway.

I like DPMS as a starter rifle, but the S&W M&P Sport should come with 5R rifling, 1:7' twist, melonite finish an a 30-round Pmag. If you can verify those features, the S&W will be a better deal.

Good thing - otherwise it'd be the wild wild west out there.

I can tell you this - if I was not allowed a carbine stock I'd be running an A1 or even better a sully stock and not a pinned carbine setup. If you're not getting the collapsibility you might as well go for the strongest setup you can get.
