    That's called Az.

My buddy has a 120 round drum for his Ar, fully legal here.

If its not automatic, its legal for the most part in Az.

Obviously you didn't look that hard.

The S&W barrel is 1:8 twist, melonite coated (treated?) and I think the DPMS is not.

I'd hazard a guess that the S&W is a better gun overall, with a solid manufacturer behind it. DPMS ... well, it's bottom of the barrel, but they work. Kind of like buying a Hyundai ... it'll work but there's better. The Sport is sort of like a Ford Escort - solid company, cheaper end of vehicles.

Look into Stag Arms, they make very good Rifles. I personally would never buy a DPMS.

It's not a cheap hobby to get into, I'll tell you that. If you want "decent" it's gonna come with a price...

Actually, it's legal to own a fully automatic machine gun in Arizona also, provided that you have filled out the proper NFA paper work and paid your $200 tax stamp.

(Of course the machine guns that you are allowed to own, per Federal Law, must have been registered with the ATF prior to May of 1986. No new builds are legal to own anywhere in the U.S, unless you are an 07 manufacturer who has paid the $500 SOP tax stamp.)

I would recommend saving a few pennies and getting something a little better. DPMS is right there with Bushmaster, etc. i personally wouldn't buy one. You would serve yourself better saving a little bit and getting a Bravo Company or something even in the top tier...LaRue, Noveske, Seekins Precision, etc. I would also suggest checking out used guns...check out different sites like AR15, M4, Snipers Hide, Lightfighter, etc. Follow the best advice...save twice and buy once.

I hate to tell you this too...$1,000 will buy you a decent rifle...if you want a bad ass rifle fully kitted out...your looking at $2,500 easily. A good lower, a Noveske barrel, a VLTOR upper, a decent rail, a Magpul CTR, some Troy back-up iron sights, an Aimpoint T1, a Geissele trigger, a nickel boron bolt and carrier, A PRI gas buster charging handle, and some PMags is going to set you back a good chunk of change!

Going to the range to shoot at targets? DPMS will do you fine. Going to Iraq to kill muslims and cover your ass and your fellow soldiers? Look into a more solid rifle. Also, buis, scopes and furniture will enhance any rifle.

Here is what I would recommend...for around $1,000:

    A. LMT Defender 2000 complete lower from DGS arms ($440)
    B. Bravo Company 16" lightweight upper w/rail ($700)

That will put you at about $1,100...then put on some MagPul back-up sights...which will get you shooting.

Then add an optic (Aimpoint or EoTech) when you find a good deal on Craig's List or eBay. Then the last thing is save $200 and buy a Geissele trigger after awhile and you will be very happy.

That will get you a really decent rifle that will give you years of trouble free service.

Depending on the area you are in, you may be able to find a Colt LE6920 for around a grand. Even the Wal-Marts in my area sell them in the $960 to $970 range. For that money, I'd buy a Colt over any others, even for more money.

I am going to tell you to go a different way, and it will cost less than 800.00.
Palmetto State Armory and build your own.
    Blem lower - 64.00
    16" Barreled Upper - 300.00
    Bolt and Carrier - 200.00
    Complete lower build kit - 180.00- 200.00

These are ballpark and some prices may be higher and some may be lower, I am at work and Palmetto is blocked so I am going from memory.
I have 1 Palmetto rifle and it has killed many hogs, coons, snakes, coyotes, rabbits, buzzards and alot of paper targets, and has never had a problem.

I hope if you had 1,000 to spend it wouldnt be on a RRA

    Best advice in this thread.

    also a good choice.

but if all you plan to do is shoot dirt clods and rabbits then honestly it wont really make a difference, just get a rifle that has the features you want. forward assist and dust covers are not really needed.

If you just want a plinker then I would look at the S&W MP15-22
looks and acts like a real AR but shoots .22lr so you can shoot all day and spend a fraction of the cost on ammo.

Building an AR is easy and fun, and for me it has been a less expensive way to get into the AR world.
