I did wipe before replacing bolt and after. I have also sprayed with degreaser. Initially I thought it was just running down from a messy job.....but not so.

If it doesn't go away after retorquing....I may have to remove bolt and look for such a piece....but I checked fairly well initially

Nothing ridiculous about using a torque wrench. I would say it’s ridiculous not to use one:crapstorm:

Hopefully that does it. If not I’d drain the oil and thoroughly examine the threads and drain hole opening, drain plug too. Get a new plug, new gasket, try one more time.

Just retorqued to 30 lb/ft.....it actually required several more turns (more than I expected). Hopefully, originally it was just not tight enough. That would be the best possible outcome and a good lesson for myself.

I guess goodntite was not good enough. Time to turn in the 5 lb dumbbells for 7.5 lb.

yep.. put 90k on a 2008 turbo mini which would spring leaks from literally everywhere except the drain plug... i changed the oil 15+ times and maybe put a new copper crush washer on it once. drain plug was always dry as a bone.

Like someone else said it takes more force than you think to crush the washer down.

This is a great anecdote for all the people that scoff at pulling out a torque wrench for the drain plug.

If you had to tighten it that much more, you’ve likely solved the problem.

If the bolt was started by hand and was not hard to tighten, you just have to torque it down a little bit more. You are not going to strip it easily.

I can recommend a Fumoto oil drain valve. While not directly addressing your question, it works well and there’s no mess.

Try a new plug or just put a fumoto valve on and be done with it.

on a side note, when I had my 2nd gen, the washer was stuck on the oil pan so never changed that and it never leaked.

Sounds like everything you did was right. Maybe try changing the bolt and washer?
