New to this site. Wanting to drain and refill the automatic transmission fluid in my '04 tacoma (2wd). I have been able to find youtube vids & walkthroughs for the 2nd gen but not much on the 1st gen tacomas. From what I gather its a little more straight forward with the 1st gen so maybe thats why theres not as much info out there.

Im more of a visual person so I just wanted to confirm if these were the correct drain plug and refill locations?

I found this helpful link on another thread: http://www.ehow.com/how_6634137_change-fluid-2003-toyota-tacoma.html

However, not sure if the transmission in this walk through is manual or auto? I'm assuming it would make a difference.

Also read that its good to drain/refill, drive, & drain/refill again. How long should I drive before doing the 2nd drain/refill? Should I do it a 3rd time?

Any additional info that you think I would need to know would be appreciated. Thanks!

Refill via your tranny dipstick hole. I know, it is small.

"I blew a tranny today" has a whole different meaning to a mechanic.

When you drain, drain in to a container that had measurement marks on it so you can replace exactly how much you drained out.

Truck has 224k miles. Bought it when it had 134k miles or so. I dont believe the transmission fluid has ever been changed since I bought it. I was recently replacing the radiator and when I pulled out the transmission lines I noticed the fluid that was dripping out was a dark cherry red. Figured it was due for an atf change.

I thought the power steering was the wrong place to refill, that's why I wanted to confirm. However, I cant locate where the transmission dipstick is. All I can find is the yellow oil dipstick and the power steering.

Anybody have a picture of the atf dipstick location on the 1st gen? Does it have a red handle?

I have an 02 4x4 V6 so it may be different but mine is on the passenger side, close to the firewall, near the outter corner of the valve cover. It sits low in the engine bay and has a dull orange handle. Hope you find it.

your filler tube is in your first picture , follow that pipe up from transmission pan to the engine compartment and you will know where to add / check transmission fluid level .

Alright found it! Haha not sure why I was having such a hard time locating it. It's on the driver side below the brake fluid compartment. Thanks for the help guys!
