So the dual VVT-i "High output" 1GR-FE found in the 4Runner and FJ cruiser uses roller rockers in its valve train, apparently that's a Toyota dual variable thing.

My gas sipper (sorry Tacoma I love you but with your armour and tires you phat.) Scion xD has the same style valve train in its 2ZR as I discovered when it threw a rocker during a lazy drive home from work one morning. The xD has been well maintained with only 112k miles and the valve train will need to be rebuilt. The missing rocker causes a miss forcing the ecu into limp mode and makes the car effectively undriveable, no acceleration with a top speed of about 15 miles an hour, what a fun time getting home the last 10 miles was.

I just wanted to post here about it because I was considering swapping in a low mile dual VVT-i motor for the extra HP/TQ/MPG. Now I most certainly will not be.

Given that I like to explore and want to overland far and away from home with my Tacoma I am unwilling to sacrifice the reliability of shim over bucket valve train for a few more ponies and pennies. Throwing a rocker on a trail would be a game over.

Another point of note is that I do plan to go supercharged and the probability of throwing a rocker in the dual VVT-i would skyrocket, where as nothing would change in the shim over bucket motor. It's just a significantly more solid design. The less moving pieces the more reliable.

I made this info graphic to help explain:

That looks like the same design ( rocker, hydraulic lifter ) used in the super reliable 2TR-FE Engine with single VVT-i.

Sure does. Why in the heck would they do that instead of shim over bucket?

Just thinking out loud here....but there are PLENTY of high mileage 4Runners and FJs out there that seem to be doing just fine. Thus, trying to correlate a poor experience with a crappy XD engine with a completely different engine is certainly not recommended. Nor does it say ANYTHING about the reliability of the system in the 4Runners and FJs.

But the logical solution was, and has always been, the supercharger. It was a bolt on OEM solution and will end up being cheaper in the long run. There's no reason to even attempt an engine or head swap.

No valve adjustments. It is a reliable system, hydraulic lifters have been around a looooong time.
