Drive belt orientation

An academic question perhaps.

Tires are installed in a certain way on the wheel - a specific side facing outwards.

Applying this concept to alternator, power steering; a/c belts.

Most have a number on the belt and one would usually install it in such a way that the number could be read from the front of the vehicle.

Would it really matter if the number on the belt were facing inward?

Queued up with Gates, Dayco; Bando - 3 belt mfgs.


All said you could run the belt either way - with part number facing fwd. or toward the interior of the vehicle. These types of belts are non-directional.


Directional belts have arrows on them.


One suggestion was to keep belt running in original direction if ever removed and reused.


Few if any Power Steering, A/C; Alternator belts are directional.
