Cruncher, would a CV joint grease work? I have some Sta Lube cv with moly disulfide, extreme pressure anti-sieze. Or, is this the wrong grease completely? Thin but coating stuff.

There is a thin layer of graphite built into the splines on our drive shafts when they are new . Once that graphite wears off the splines , that nice soft / smooth application goes away and you end up with a clunk . Sometimes the clunk is only noticeable when downshifting , sometimes only noticeable from forward to reverse
There is no suitable replacement for spline wear other than a new driveshaft .The trick is to keep the splines lubricated from brand new . Problem is , not every guy is going to remove his driveshaft every 6 months to re-apply spline lube
With this said , constant velocity grease is much thinner in design compared to the grease I have listed that is designed to function with splines . Even the good stuff at $40 bucks a can eventually gets wiped off and it only lasts about 6 months mileage dependant ofcourse .
Spicer makes the drive shafts for General Motors , Ford , Chrysler , Toyota and they all end up with spline wear creating clunks .
They usually call the male end of the spline the " STUB " , the female yoke is called the " SLIP " Slip and Stub "
The slip or female YOKE is usually designed with softer internal splines than the stub shaft .
99 percent of the time , replacing just the yoke will cure the clunk for a long time as long as it is lubricated well when assembled
When you take your driveshaft apart , clean the slip and stub until they are both clean and dry . Assemble on the bench dry and twist the slip and stub in opposite directions and you will be able to feel how much free play there is

Did a lot of jimmying of the driveshaft today while under there greasing things. My “ping” is definitely coming from the damn slip yoke. When I get back from wheeling next weekend I suppose I will need to remove the whole thing and lube it up.
