2006, 6-speed manual transmission. I jumped in today to drive, put it in reverse, heard a loud pop come from underneath somewhere, and when I gave it gas to reverse, the vehicle wouldn't move. It wasn't that the gear wasn't engaged, because I clearly felt resistance when giving it gas. Put it in first to move forward, and same result; felt resistance to move while giving it gas. It felt like i had a chock block under my tires (but obviously didn't).So I put it in neutral, jumped out and rocked it gently back and forth until I heard another pop, and then it moved freely as designed. Drove off with no issues. No strange feeling in the gears, no popping noises. Nothing. Anyone have any idea what it could have been? Something I need to worry about?

    Possibly rear drums were sticking.

Did you set the ebrake right after driving or with the brakes wet. Every now again sometime the rear shoes will bake themselves to the rear drums.

Last time I drove it was in the rain in the evening. Got home, set the e-brake. Temp got over 100 the next day. Maybe it was the brakes

Drove home in the rain, and then it sat. Basically the same thing

Mine will do that occasionally. Takes a little pop to unlock it. Has done that rarely for several years with no ill effect. I set the parking brake every time I drive it and figure it just hangs up at times.

mine does that, or similar to what you explained. I think it's the parking brake.

Happened to my 07 after washing/sitting overnight. This was probably around 2008 or 09... hasn't happened since.

    Can't wait to start!
I had that happen to me in the last few months, once released it was fine. Then last week after re-adjusting the drum brakes one would always grab going forward and I discovered one of my parking brake cables is seized in the engaged position. I just ordered the parts so can't tell if that is the problem, but might be worth checking yours.

Parking brake cables are notorious for getting sticky on these trucks, I had to replace the driver's side on mine

It was probably the brakes. If something was broken in the transmission or drivetrain it would likely be making noise as you drive

Yep. Far different than 'drive train locked up'.

Some folks use 4wd to help pop them loose if it's really bad.

But on a 19 yo model, I'd be examining the ebrake system and all the drum internals to make sure all is in clean, lubed and adjusted properly. Especially if it's lived in salt land.

    Really, just routine maintenance.

Yeah, my E-brake has seemed off as of late. I'll take your recommendation and have the brakes looked at. Thank you for the input
