Hi all, I have a 99 sr5 prerunner. I have trying to figure out where this clunk in coming from. 8 times out of 10 when i come to a stop and let off the brake i will feel a light thump in my driveline. And another way i can feel it is when i’m going 65 or so down the highway and i can let off the gas. and feel no thump. when i do that. but if i tap the gas quickly i will also feel the thump.

i don’t think it would be axle wrap because i just replaced my whole rear end suspension with 5100s and deaver j59s.

I have replaced my center driveshaft support bearing. it made my highway vibs go away but didn’t help the thump.

what i think it could possibly be is my transmission rubber mount thing. i can go under and push around on my driveline and it has the most play. the center bolt is like halfway out. which seems to be the case on everyone else’s truck.

i have also greased all the fittings. i wasn’t sure how much to put in the slip yoke because i put a solid 10 pump and it didn’t bleed out. so i stopped. the greasing didnt change anything.

so all in all, i’m pretty stumped on what it could be. my guess would be that trans mount.

if it matters i have the a340e trans. and i have a regear from ECGS.

My vote is the rear Trans mount.

Bad u-joints can cause that, but so can the trans mount. If you think that mount is bad, replace it and see what happens

I've got the clunk (sounds like an STD, hah) from standstill takeoff only. Haven't had time to address it yet but everything I've read points to slip yoke. You have to take apart the driveshaft and lube it with PTFE grease, not zerk-able. This guy has a good video demo on process

that seems like the case. but my driveshaft looks nothing like that. the guy has a second gen so it’s different when it comes to that rubber boot. mine has the zerk for the yoke and i know it was pumping inside it. i just didn’t know how much to put in there

3 or 4 pumps max is general concensus on TW. Too much can cause shaft to bottom out in the yolk resulting in a thump sound. Once you get the thump you have to disassemble/clean and grease with Ford PTFE by hand.

There a good chance it’s in the Cardan joint. This joint has a zerk that gets missed when the un joints
are greases because it’s hidden and the joint gets worn out. Have you greased this joint?

agree on this. And it can be hard to get a grease gun on there too. A “Lock N Lube” grease gun tip makes it A LOT easier to grease. Pic of the cardan zerk for reference.

LockNLube Grease Coupler locks onto Zerk fittings. Grease goes in, not on the machine. World's best-selling original locking grease coupler. Rated 10,000 PSI. Long-lasting rebuildable tool. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H7LPKKU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0h4IDbT2SADNW

I had a clunk also, my research showed it could be a rear tranny mount or worn carrier bearing. I replaced the bearing (Rockauto spicer $59) and the clunk is gone, it was as OP described, at stop when releasing the brake.

I've also heard that it could be old leaf springs. I have the same problem. 270k and the leafs look flatter than a skinny chick's chest in spandex lol

Yes the slip yoke must be taken apart to be properly greased. Clunking and that loud "TING" sound when moving forward or reverse is usually associated with a slip yoke that needs to be properly greased.

What the OP is describing though sounds like axle wrap to me. 1st gen Tacomas are notorious for it. The leaf springs bind up and then release when you come to a stop and it creates a feeling like you've been tapped from behind by another car. Beefier leaf springs should help

I will look into that camden joint. i have replaced to beefier leafs. it did help but not a lot. carrier bearing fixed highway vibs. i will take the rear drive shaft out and manually grease it one day. so maybe the trans mount plus the slip yoke grease will fix this issue. thanks for the replies. any more would help as well
