KaPantsKey, chas44, rainmn, Can you help with a favor? Can any of you look at the overload springs on your new leafs and let me know if the pads at the ends of the overload leaf are different between the drivers and passenger sides? Mine are smooth pads on the drivers side and rough textured pads on the passenger side. I don't know if it really matters, but just wanted to check it out.

    Thanks,

I first noticed a squeak coming from the driveshaft/u joints about a year ago on my 06 Reg Cab w/50K miles. Ordered some joints w/grease nipples and planned to replace. Never got around to it as I only drive my truck about twice a week on short around town errands. The squeak went away.

Then 6 months ago the 'shudder' appeared during acceleration 25mph+. That's when I was alerted to the TSP and all the woes experienced by others here on the forum. Too late for warranty work

Now, the shudder is extreme. It's there in all the power bands, accel and deceleration. So severe that it rattles my phone out of it's cradle on the vent holder!

When I stopped in to discuss with my local dealer's service manager, he was very familiar with the TSP and problem.

He explains that they have lost $$$ attempting to repair via the TSP and that the problem is the driveshaft. Once the u-joints failed, the driveshaft became out of balance when internal balancing was thrown off. Only fix is new u-joints and driveshaft.

Of course, Toyota will not assist in repair cost.

So, does a rear lift change the drive line angles? Possibly causing/amplifying vibrations, and probably speeding up wear on the center support bearing?

If that is true wouldn't the same would be true if the rear leaf springs lost their arc and dropped say 2-3 inches? You would see the same change in drive line angle, vibrations with the shaft, and early CSB failure. If I'm way off, let me know.

So, I have my appt set up for Monday. They printed me a list of what they said they will do but they didn't measure the driveline angles...

What fixes the take off shudder is the way the new leaf pack mounts to the axle. It turns the pinion angle slight upwards to straighten the angles a bit. Also IMO the main reason for the shudder was the weak leafs, when torqued by the drive line would twist into an "S" shape throwing off the angles even more. The stiffer springs prevent the twisting (or aka axle wrap).

I agree with this. At first the leafs were pretty dern stiff, but now they feel pretty good.

Yeah it was a little jarring at first when hitting bumps, etc. I will admit I am super happy with how this all shook out. I am noticing more and more that I have some decent rake and can't decide if I want to level or not. Definitely not before 36,000 miles though.

The new springs turn DOWN the axle INCREASING pinion angle to match the angle of the trans u joint angle. Just look at the shims on the leaf springs.... fat end of the shim is on the front side of the axle.

I LOVE how much more firm the new 4 leaf packs are over my original 3 leafs that came on my off road... it rides like a truck should now, and i dont have to worry about putting 100 lbs in the back and having the headlights shoot to the moon.

I went in today for my Toyota Care service, told them about my issue with the vibration again, and to my surprise, the head mechanic was aware of the TSB, and said they would order the parts. Should be a little over a week, then schedule an appointment. Much different than the last time around. I might get a smooth accelerating truck after all, which is the biggest issue I have with my Tacoma. Other than that, I love it.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
Maybe that dealer just has A-holes in service area?
A dealer service tech once told me the u-joints can't be done on 05 Tacoma and they'd have to replace the entire driveshaft as an assembly. I haven't gone to that dealer since then.

Anyone had this done on a lifted one yet? I've already got trac bars and a 1" carrier drop but still a little vibe on take off between 0-10mph.

For those of you who got rid of the vibs with new tbs. Did you guys also have vibs at high speed 60-75mph. If so did that get eliminated as well?

For those that have had it done, how long did it take to get new Leaf springs in? My 2013 went in about 3 weeks ago and I still haven't gotten any word from the dealer, and when I called, he said they weren't in yet. Is this typical?
