OK yes you are right.. the protractor will measure relative to the ground, relative to what ever angle the protractor was zero'd at... that still doesn't change the measured angle of the pinion. You could have the truck standing vertical on its tailgate and measure the pinion and it would have the same angle as if it was normal....

Actually nd4spdbh is correct. It doesn't matter if the front is lifted 12 inches. The ground has NOTHING to do with the angles and the angles are NOT relative to the ground. The joint angle is only the difference between the flange and shaft, which will not change no matter what is done to the front. I understand what the TSB says, but not performing it just because he has different coils at stock height is ridiculous.

I had the TSB done over a month ago. Good news is the 15-20mph vibration is gone. Bad news it seems to have since developed a loud thunk on light acel, breaking and turning. You can feel it in the floor. It seems to be getting worse.

I took it back to the dealer and they re-torqued everything. But they couldn't hear the thunk. I even did a ride along and at the time couldn't get it to produce it at the time. It wasn't doing it prior to the TSB. The thunk seems to started a couple weeks later. I had a friend walk along side and it's defiantly coming from the rear. 2wd or 4wd doesn’t matter.

I'm thinking its drive train or the springs. Any ideas what I should check before returning to the dealer?

Also these springs seem real flat to me, although I don't think the rear is sagging. Look normal?

One of the reasons for me waiting is to get enough success stories.

I fully expect the service writer to say 'it won't work'. I think they're sensitive cause I didn't buy the truck from them. Or maybe not. e.g. They argued about TSB for a 06 Corolla tensioner that they didn't do; just replaced the serpentine belt in 3/36. When the belt went out 20k miles later (and out of warranty) they argued the tensioner was good. Problem is, that was NOT what the TSB said which was 'early belt failure, replace belt AND tensioner'. Don't re-engineer for toyota, just do the friggin work.

If its scheduled for a slow shop time whatever reimburse fm Mr. T. would be more appreciated.

I'm encouraged by all the good reports. My wife doesn't like to drive it because of the slo speed vibs in the steering wheel; one time I hard accelerated, the vibe really bothered her. She didn't say anything in particular, just complained when she had to drive it. She thinks it's losing control.....

Surprised though that alignment had to be done; anyone else need this? I know load in the bed/amount of gas will affect the angles a little.

The parts are on order and I'm getting mine done next week. Have held off for a while because like OCNutty, I was waiting to get some feedback before making the plunge. Will update everyone when the work has been completed.

Surprisingly, the dealer didn't give me any push back about performing the work at all. In fact, when I took it in I deliberately didn't mention the TSB because I wanted to see what they came back with when I complained about vibrations at low speeds. The service manager had me take him for a drive to replicate the problem then showed me the TSB without any prompting on my part. He said they wouldn't guarantee it would make the problem go away completely but it should get much better.

Apparently he's done the TSB an a couple of his friends trucks and he said in some cases you could still feel the vibration, especially under hard acceleration. We'll see, anything would be an improvement.

I am in Northern VA and I had mine done at Koons Arlington Toyota, they were great about it, showed them the TSB, replicated the problem and they didn't ask any questions, just got it done. I will say the vibration is gone for the msot part, but I do still feel it a bit under hard acceleration from a dead stop. But I rarely have to do this so its not a pressing issue to me.

I shot a bunch of silicon lube between all the leafs and now the thunk is gone. I guess they were sticking together and poping loose. Kinda weird but i'll take it. Everything is nice and smooth now.

I went to Bill Page Toyota in Falls Church. Ourisman is much closer to where I live, but I bought the truck at Page so I thought that if there was any push back my leverage might be better where it was bought.

Just as an update, they called yesterday afternoon and said some of the parts were on backorder and it would be another week before they could perform the work.

Those of you who have had this tsb performed did you also have a vibration around 75-80mph? If so did the tsb solve it? I'm taking mine in next week for the tsb for the take off vibration but I'm also getting one around 75-80 as well.

There is only one current TSB and yes it only applies to autos. Not sure why though.

Well Glory Be; They're my dealer; Finally I get to relax on this one. (I showed them the TSB in late Feb and they had crossed-eyes so worry set in)
I'll have them verify it at my oil change on 14 June and get the process going.!!

On your earlier post about it not taking all the vib out, I've noticed it's is closely related to bed load/fuel amount. If my truck is at 1/8 tank (this am) the low speed 20mph/part throttle vibe was virtually gone. I put in enough to get it to 5/8 and the vibe was very noticable esp in the steering wheel. So this is the condition I'll have when it's in for the fix. Fully expect the fix to raise the bed height.

I just bought a brand new 2014 DC TRD Off road and have a slight shudder when taking off at full throttle. Does this TSB affect the 2014s? I apologize if this has been answered already but there are a lot of responses and mostly related to 2005-2013 didnt see anything specific to 2014.

Technically no.... but print out the TSB take it in ask to talk to the service manager and be like look... i didnt just pay 35k for a truck to not have a problem fixed just because of the year marked on the vehicle.

Why, nd4spdbh, do you keep posting bogus information ?

    basic reading and comprehension

    Directly from the TSB:

    Applicability
    YEAR(S) MODEL(S) ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION
    2005 – 2014
    Tacoma Transmission(s):
    5AT

    VDS(s): JU4GN, JU62N, KU4HN, KU72N, LU42N,
    LU4EN, MU4FN, MU52N, TU4GN, TU62N,
    UU42N, UU4EN

Now, I often make mistakes myself, a ton of them. I am full of crap half the time. But dammit kid you keep posting info contrary to the TSB.

First, you said lifting the front doesn't matter. For the TSB, it does. You are welcome to write up a procedure that always works by measuring angles against something other than earths gravity to account for 'insert front suspension mod here' but no Toyota Tech will do it. The only way the TSB can be pulled off consistently and accurately is a worldwide common baseline and that is: factory spec Tacoma suspension, on a wheel 'or ride-height' lift.

Now, you say 'technically doesn't affect 2014' but the TSB IS FOR 2005-2014. Not maybe, definitely.

    gawd !!!

Hey man thanks for the clarification. My truck defiantly is in one of those VINs. This website is invaluable.

On another note, I see that your located @ /etc/hosts. Mac or Linux : )
