I am getting my truck repaired due to a wreck. One of the parts getting replaced is the driver bedside. The body shop said there is a national shortage on those, is that correct?

I don't know but it would not be unusual.

Someone tried stealing my truck and ripped off the driver's side door handle in the process and getting that part took almost 3 months due to "nation wide back order".

It eventually made its way to VA from California.

So it wouldn't be unusual at all

I have read this several times, often taking months, upwards of 6 months. If drivable, maybe they can order parts and you keep you truck while you wait, or see if they can find salvage parts.
It seems silly there’s such a backlog, but times are silly and only seem to worsen. Every day I’m more and more impressed with how bad things have become.

The dealer should be able to see what’s in the pipeline (if any) and give you a guess. It’s not like it’s an obsolete item.

Sounds like the perfect time to order fiberglass widebody bed sides.... they will probably show up sooner.

Parts delays have been around forever. This is nothing new. A few times during my career, I was involved in having a part pulled off the line in order to fix a vehicle that needed a part that was on intergalactic backorder. That's a near impossibility today.

I blame it on the cell phone industry. And automatic transmissions.

You can probably find a used 2nd gen bed and make it fit.

I ran into this with a grille replacement on my truck. My body shop uses OEM parts and the grilles come from Toyota with the outer shroud pre-painted body color. I've got a 2016 TRD OR that I added the Pro insert to. My shop was able to get the Pro insert without an issue but was coming up with a backorder reply when they went to find my grille. They originally wanted to do a CAPA part they painted and offered to do a black Toyota part they'd paint. I mentioned that Toyota changed the grille for the different years / trims and gave the shop all the different combos for trim / years in my color. From this my shop was able to find a grill that didn't have a backorder and got it for me.

It might be worth a deep dive on your part to see if any other alternate part versions exist for your truck, maybe Toyota did something similar. It seems unlikely as the metal was unchanged year to year, but maybe they can find something.

You do know the whole bedside was redesigned, right? Absolutely none of the body lines will line up in the slightest. If they wanted to go used, why wouldn't they go 3G?

I was making a joke. :) I know the body lines wont match up, and for anybody that wants to make a truck right isn't going use the wrong bed.

I'm just wondering if it would fit with the different body lines. For anybody who has a 3g cab and 2g bed to work with.

Toyota is constantly having national shortages. I had to have the rear bumper and bed on my 2023 aligned and the tabs broke on my step pad when it was removed and it was on back order luckily the dealer found one.

    Good luck!
