Same problem on my 2016. Toyota is not supporting warranty but Discovered more by removing the sill molding and gasket. Back at Toyota So far no support hoping they change their position.

And those were the basic reasons (lack of prep, lack of anti-corrosion coating) given for the frame corrosion. Everyone is hanging their hats that it won't happen in trucks beyond 2010 models but sheet metal cancer hasn't been something of particular worry so far either.

Those reporting rust: are you all from states with use of salt on the roads, and have you only gone through 1 winter?

this shit make chemists and engineers cry

Toyota knows the shit can't rust like that

they pay millions to designers and chemists to develop paints that
    -meet environmental regulations
    -sell cars
    -don'r rust out your shit
-don't break the bank (shareholder have to be happy for 1 quarter year at a time)

so the chemists write up the specifications that absolutely fit the bill,
but each and every step in the production and paint process MUST but be done to spec for it to work

sad to see shit slippin by..probably dumbasses staring at the i-phone instead of calibrating shit correctly

My '16 is doing the same thing on the driver side sill only. I've had two CorrosionFree treatments since new and been through two NYS winters.

I've noticed the paint on many new vehicles has lot's of orange peel. The cheapest water downed coatings coming out of China don''t lay and adhere like a top quality premium coating.

I have three vehicles over 25 years old showing no signs of rust.

I had a 2005 for 11 years and never rust on body!! Frame was replaced though!! It appears on the 2016 to be trapping water in the gasket and it runs down to the bottom and pools there. If you see signs pull off the molding piece the lift the gasket and inspect the area

Anecdotal I know, but I parked outside during construction instead of in our work garage for one of the wettest winters we've had here in WA and no water pooling or rust there.

OK Update.... Just got factory approval on the rust repair. They originally rejected it until spots were discovered under the weather seal.

I would suggest all owners pull the sill cover then also lift the weather stripping It appears to be trapping moisture. Good Luck!

Wow, that sucks to see those rust spots on your trucks. If the dealers say no to cover it, I have had good luck with POR-15 paint. It can be top coated with touch up paint in a rattle can.

    I know, I know!
I pulled the weather strip around all the doors and hit it with Fluid Film. It may help if members would put their location (State). Those of us in the North East live with corrosive salt 4-6 months of the year, rust is Inevitable. A Round up pump sprayer and Fluid film should be in your arsenal!

I can't believe I didn't update this. Took my dealer a few months to get it into the show. Once they got it torn apart and were able to look at it more closely they found the truck wasn't rusting, it was just something that got in the paint with a little moisture and started seeping through the paint. So they sanded the imperfections away, repainted and it's all good to go!

@mlatner Thank you for starting this thread. I just pulled my seal and only noticed some rust streaks at the very front of the cab where the three pieces of metal join the spot weld. I was able to clay away the rust streaks and saw no evidence of bubbling, only 1-2 areas where the paint had chipped on the edges of the metal. I doused it in FF will be adding this area to my annual FF regimen.

You didn't happen to get a glimpse / photos of the sill once the paint was removed but before it was resprayed, right? I'd be curious to see how much of the area was affected.

    @mpoirier61

What was the resolution for your repair? What did they find? Also, did you have the black stick-on sill protectors, or did you remove them to find the blisters? I'm so conflicted by this bubbling because I've always grown accustomed to bubbling = bad rot, but it seems like it's truly a paint flaw, which is interesting.
