Hello all! I just took my 2018 TRD sport LB in for this exact issue. I was cleaning the carpets and noticed a little orange spot near the rubber seal on the drivers side. Popped off the panel and the strip and of course its rusts :( Long story short, yep it was made in mexico. Dealer put me in a loaner tacoma for a day and put in the paper work to get it into a third party bodyshop for repair.

This was the first they have seen of this too this early in age. Mine is a 2018 with only 18k on it still. Kinda sad shes already rusting, but i did clean the underside before winter and applied fluidfilm all over with the kit and gun. Now i will have to make sure i FF that area as well!

God damn salt in the midwest destroys everything!

I had this exact problem on my truck. Toyota corporate told me to pound sand. There is a fricking tsb and they wouldn't cover it? That really pisses me off.

2x bluetop, recovery bedrack, too much stuff inside to handle.
I've got the same problem on all of my door sills (2016 OR) I haven't brought it to the dealer yet, but I will after they start working on my wife's 4Runner that just up and started spewing oil everywhere.

I just got back from car wash and saw rust under seal in drivers door in 3 spots,I live in LA and its a desert, little rain,no snow. Its a silver 2017 with 20,020 miles. Is it too late to have dealer take the blame? Other doors look ok

Mine had the same rust, they sand blasted and painted it under warranty at 45K miles on a 2016.

My 2016 has this issue on both the driver and passenger side. over 60K miles now. Scheduled to have it inspected this week. Expecting push back from the dealer,
    any suggestions?

There is a TSB on it. However, Toyota won't cover it due to the age of your truck. They wouldn't do so on my 2017 due to the age, either. The estimate I received was $435 since I had it on both front doors. I'm likely going to do it myself and cover up the shoddy work with vinyl.

Thanks, yes I did see the TSB. First Toyota ever and it has been kind of let down. :( too bad. I am going to try anyhow and see what the dealer says.

06/28/21 update - So I had it looked at by one of the local Toyota dealers. They sent it to Body shop, took pics, and told me the Toyota rep makes decision. truck has 72k, but very clean condition. They got back to me last Friday.... Estimate is @2200.00, Toyota will cover $1500.00. :) The Body shop representative has an office inside the Toyota dealership. They determined this the exact issue in the TSB, and even mentioned it is very minor at this point. Anyone else get the feeling this is maybe a $700.00 repair and it is just a clever way of funneling work to a specific body shop?
