since the 3rd gen is missing the driver side grab handle, would a grab handle from 2nd gen fit on the 3rd gen?

Not sure about a Gen 2 working but the mounts are there, the lower one doesn’t have a threaded nut however so you would have to install a pem nut.

As long as you took left and right sides so they match, only problem there is that I believe all 2nd Gens are grey in color.

Why did Toyota do this? Some idiot engineer decided that driver side has steering wheel? Tundras are same way but they took it out around 2014. Fortunately for me the parts from 2013 are same as 2017 so I just ordered one for earlier model. As long as the pillar trim is the same you can do same on Tacoma. I just had to get a U nut and a bolt. Got both at Lowes in specialty drawers.

Maybe they removed it to get a better rating when they did the crash testing. It's possible the dummies head was striking the handle on the offset crash testing.

Coincidentally, we will have more dummies to prove this hypothesis once they start reinstalling them on their own.

I put a tiny nylon grab handle attached to the single bolt location that is threaded. I don't use it too much, but I'm glad its there.

    1. Engineers are not idiots.
    2. Engineers do not make decisions on something like a grab handle being removed. Marketing and Research would have made that decision based on input from customers. Then the engineer would have made it happen.
    3. If there is no grab handle there, you can thank yourself (a consumer) and others like you. Toyota would have gotten input from focus groups filled with people like you. Toyota listens to their customers.

Oh really? Then why can't I get a crewcab diesel 70 series pickup here in the usa? I've asked Toyota nicely several times!!

They listen to the masses. 50K customers want something > two dozen customers wanting something.

Trust me, if enough people wanted the left side grab handle then there would be a left side grab handle. Then the bean counters would just raise the price of the truck by a dollar. Again, the wants of the masses is greater than the wants of a few. I know how this works. I live that dream every day...

Is that why Toyota is the only truck manufacturer without a diesel option in the US?

This! I’d love a LC70 with that v8 turbo diesel. And I’d be one of like six people who buy one here. People forget that it’d be priced at or above raptor terrority - and there’s one other BOF Toyota that’s priced that high and Toyota sells a relative handful a year at best.

Why bother when Nissan is running that experiment. The Titan XDs don’t seem to be flying off the shelves...

Lots out there on this...headbanging is always a good excuse...penny pinching is a 1/2 empty view...maybe the airbag (I'll give one nod to engineers)...if you try out a Gen2 and it fits please post so I can do same, I consider this the greatest drawback of the new trucks...somewhat petty but with such an awesome truck petty matters!

Oh, if you think that's the biggest drawback to the 3rd gen, you're going to have a great time once you get one!

    Probably.

for the GM twins, the diesel only accounted for about 10% of all sales.

If Toyota added a diesel it would likely be the same ratio.

I'd be one of the 6!!!

That said you are right, it will be expesnive. The piece of shit, no bells and whistles, base model Africa version of the Land cruiser we drove in Africa was like $70k

    EDIT: 50k for a 2010...
