I can’t imagine the mix of human / non human cars sharing the road.
Humans will assume the autonomous cars will (successfully?) avoid whatever they do behind the wheel..

    yee haw!

I can't imagine an autonomous vehicle that isn't electric.

It's basically a computer on wheels, and all electric just seems a better fit.

Also, in order to work, there will be cameras all over the thing.

I saw this sign a few weeks ago- I notice cameras or towers for cameras going up all over.

If speeding, running red lights etc can legally be enforced with cameras, autonomous vehicles will probably be ratting out human drivers if we are not following the law to the "T".

I have read that when autonomous vehicles are mainstream, private vehicle ownership will be something only the very wealthy will be able to afford.

    Fwiw...

I like driving too much, and it gives me anxiety to have someone else in the driver's seat because I can't predict what they will do in the event of a hairy situation. I'd rather be in control and have the freedom to make any necessary safety maneuvers.

Lazyiness and convenience are what they are appealing to. Around the same time this rolls out, we will all have home robots. Robots who clean, cook, bang the wife for you, etc. Because convenience. Johnny 5 does it better.

Here's a brief on the NHTSA statistics: https://crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/ViewPublication/812115
Those numbers are extrapolated from analyzing ~2.2 million crashes. I don't think they're going off insurance statements :)

There's definitely a lot of work that needs to happen before autonomous vehicles are reliably safer than human drivers. I think we'll start seeing pretty impressive results in the next 5 years. Machines are only likely to do what we tell them they're allowed to.

Ehhh that's kind of narrow minded. Technology makes our lives easier and therefore more productive in lots of ways. That doesn't translate to laziness. What if I hit the self-drive button on the truck, pull out my laptop and get actual work done that I'm getting paid to do, instead of just staring at the road and listening to the radio?

One thing I hate about driving is it's hard to enjoy the scenery. Crusing down a scenic interstate on auto pilot would be great.

Hate to say it, but I fear what we are heading for is a future where all we have is a bunch of beta-males getting their auto-driving Cyber Trucks to drive them and their sex-robot/doll girlfriend to the Catskills for the weekend.

I think I will start thinking more closely about emigrating to a less developed region of the earth, where a man can still be a man......dagnammit.

You will have given over the last remnant of personal time you had for contemplative reflection to your employment, thus further degrading your sense of self and resulting is just more unnecessary consumerism, assuming you will actually be paid at all for this additional work.

Truly the alternative. If not progressing, you're regressing. De-evolution.

"If you ain't first, you're last". We don't really know what's in store for EVERYONE. Just where tech. is headed.

There will be pockets of resistance John Conner.
