OP just left the dealership, and shit in very close proximity to the work at hand is falling the fuck off the truck.
My money in on the hack that was just under the OP's truck.

I think I know this dealership. Do these service techs look familiar?

How about check to see who torqued that bolt. Then have his punk ass fired. Do you even look at your truck after you pick it up?

When I drove it to my home to orange county it was fine. It was when I was coming home to San Diego is when the problem started. We are from San Diego but my wife is a doctor and got a job up at USC so we swap between San Diego and Orange county.

What do you guys think about the differential and the pinion gear? I have a feeling it is toast. When I called a Reputable gear supply that we all know they said for sure the rear end is jacked

My guess is that the tech put the bolts in hand tight and forgot to torque them, then they backed out during the 200 miles.

I would just have it put back together and see how it is. It will all be documented if there is an issue in the future. Get that extended warranty from them!!!!

I feel like that would be doubtful. I also feel amazed that you were able to drive it for 2 hours and not stop to peek under your truck at what that weird noise was...

There's 2 people who goofed in this story imo.

Good luck with getting any dealer to agree to that. First thing I would do is see if they will take responsibility for the mistake. Once that occurs, then you can start making demands. My guess is that they will bolt it up nice and tight with minimal parts and call it good and say it's a warranty issue.

He mentioned that he knew something was wrong when he started to hear a whine when not on the gas due to the driveline angle changing. That got me thinking.

My rear differential whines anyway. It has since new. It's been replaced once which made it worse. I had the TSB done and it didn't help. I kind of want to remove the driveshaft carrier bearing bolts and reinstall with washers between the mounting plate and the cross member to tweak the driveline angle ever so slightly to see if it has any impact at all on the noise.

It probably wouldn't work or would make the angle even worse but it would be a cheap, easy, and interesting experiment.

It would be even worse if the OP took it in for minor seeping around the Rear Diff Gasket, once they start to monkey around you never know what might happen.

It probably won't. Lots of guys myself included mess with this when the truck is lifted and no one has ever said anything about the noise changing. I think my noise actually got worse with the lift..

But, but... every truck is special and unique. Go for it if you want, you never know.

Agreed. It's unlikely to work but I just never bought into the 'it's just harmonic resonance' school of thought. I may try it just because it's so easy to do but I give it very low odds of working.

Since I swapped out the stock tires for the Nitto Terra Grapplers (G1) the road noise is loud enough that it almost drowns out the whine anyway. I'm just too OCD to let it go.

I mean, you should because that's what it is. There have been other failures and issues of course, but for the most part that's what it is.

It think what I would do is tell the dealer I no longer felt safe driving the truck. Tell them a 100k warranty would help, and that everything will be documented with corporate, just for proper record keeping. Let them decide what to replace. If the truck kills you, sue the hell out of them from the afterlife :)

Wow. Had this happen to my 03after having the rear pinion seal replaced. Carrier bearing fell down, had a catastrophic failure. Driveshaft broke in half at the center bearing, shot out of the yoke and blew a nice hole in my gas tank. Dealer replace driveshaft, and bearing. Patched the gas tank and sold the thing for 15g lol
