I went to Cottmann Transmission the other day for a free diagnostic. I notice my truck is jerky when pulling off, shifting to reverse or drive, and when coming to a stop. Just recently I heard a noise from it. They said it was jammed or something like that and that they would have to rebuild it. Since I am starting out in college, money is kind of tight for me right now. They gave me an estimate of $1350 plus tax. I wanna ask you guys do you think that be the problem, or can it easily be solved without a rebuild?

what? What specifically needs to be "rebuilt"?

The u joints might be toast. (easy change)
The tranny fluid could use a change...

And if its Clunking at start/stop, it sounds like axle wrap. (add a leaf will stop that crap)

The other thing might be the carrier bearing...

Either way, fuck paying 1400 for for a "rebuild" when you could toss the current shaft, buy a Tom woods 1 piece, and eliminate any slight wobble you might of had before. A new precision balanced 1 piece drive shaft, with new mounting plates and tom woods gold sealed u joints, would run you about 450, before shipping... Best part, a 1 piece is lighter, stronger, doesnt need a carrier bearing, will have zero wobble, and will require slightly less RPM's to get up to speed (less rotational mass for the engine to turn)

If he did indeed say that the drive shaft was "jammed", then he was BSing you. I've been doing my own maintenance on my own cars, motorcycles, and trucks for the last 50+ years and I never heard of a "jammed" drive shaft.

I would first look at the rear trans mount, then both U-joints.

Oh, and I would take my business elsewhere.

OP, i realize your in New Orleans, and I'm up in Virginia, but my experience with Cottman's was horrible, would not recommend. I'd suggest taking your business elsewhere personally. Again, COMPLETELY different shops, but it sounds like they are trying to screw you over...

Go to the thread below and ask for help or if anyone knows a reputable shop. It is the Louisiana thread. A lot of great folks in that thread. I'm in North Louisiana and don't know any shops down there.
