driveshaft spacer question

    so i made my own, pic below. the bolt barely goes above the nut up top and i was curious if you guys think i should get a longer bolt or would that be ok to drive with? i dont want those 2 bolts coming loose then having my driveshaft fall from the middle :eek:

    The big question is, did it work??? I'm assuming you had some vibrations? About the bolt, I would get a longer one. If it was me, everytime I was driving my truck, all I would think about is that bolt and how I half-assed it and imagine the driveshaft falling out.

    helllz ya it worked like a charm. piece of aluminum about .34" and just put it in there and took it for a drive, no vibrations whatsoever! so happy haha and it cost me nothing. so should i just go to home depot and get a bolt from them or what? and do i just take in the one i got on there now?

    Had tons on the Taco's.... new truck is pretty stock
    I'd want to get a harder bolt than the standard hardware you buy, I'd make sure to get grade 8. As for how, just bring the ratchet/socket with ya and crawl under and remove it once you're in the parking lot if you dont know what thread and length to get. Just dont forget to reinstall after you buy the new bolts ;)
    Im getting a decent drivetrain shudder lately so i think im gonna go and do this when I get a chance

    its really easy to do. i just got some aluminum make it into a square. the hole is bigger than a 3/8" but if you use a 3/8" drill then you can self tap the screw into that which will thread your spacer and make it a really strong connection between the whole setup.

    relentlesstaco you wouldnt know off the top of your head the thread would you lol

    If your hole is 3/8, you can use a 3/8-16 grade 8 bolt. I would suggest either a locking nut or a locking washer also. These can all be found at your local hardware store.

    The metric equivalent would be a M10 x 1.5.

    Threading the spacer doen't not make a stronger connection.

    so i went to home depot got the 3/8 grade 8. tried to put it on and for some reason it doesnt want to work. im hoping the bracket tread is stronger than the bolt thread cause i might have tried to screw it in there :(
    i measured the bolt sizes the original one of the tacoma is .386" the new one i got is .369"
    what do i need to do?

    The bracket is threaded? You made it sound like it was a thru-hole (no threads). It's a 10mm bolt then. Measure the length and then get one a little longer. It will be in mm. Probably a pitch of 1.5

    oh im sorry. ill explain better. when you remove the bolt there is a nut that is welded to the top of the "housing". so when i remove the bolt the nuts still there. should i just chop off the nut and do my own thing or what?

    and the .386" and .369" measures are over the threaded part of the bolt

    Ok, I got you now. Two options:

    1. Toyotas are metric. The bolt with either be a M10 x 1.25 or M10 x 1.5. You can get the right bolt only longer.

    2. Drill the hole out and use washers and a nut and a longer bolt (standard or metric) I would recommend staying metric.

    thank you very very much. unfortunately i dont have time right now so ill go back tonight..
    you think for the time being id be ok to drive. i carry the wrench and size with me everywhere. iv driven about 50 miles so far and it hasnt come loose yet at all and its on there pretty good

    It would make me nervous personally. It might be better to take the spacers out for now until you get new hardware, for safety's sake.

    ok so i found some tacoma bolts i had lying around. they look the same but longer, so i tried them. PERFECT! about a quarter inch longer, showing on the top. so happy got this done and fixed woo hoo me and all your help guys! lol

    vib free which means i gotta now pay to sit in a vibrating chair :(

    I would go with blue. Red is a bit overkill of this type of application. None the less, I would at the very least use a lock washer. A lock washer and some blue loctite would be ideal.

    When you install the spacers, install one at a time. This will prevent misaligning the driveshafts.

    im buying some blue also cause iv got to replace some tranny bolts also that i lost so ya def use some blue.

    what do you mean one at a time. i loosed one side put it on tightened it. then loosened the other side and put that on and tightened it.. is that what you mean?
