05 4×4 4.0 I'm having issues with the driveline and possibly the motor mounts. Basically, I have a clunk/thud pretty much anytime I accelerate, let off the gas while driving, and while braking, particularly from a dead stop and when coming to a dead stop (almost feels like the motor or driveline adjusts with an audible thud and you can feel it, its not subtle. This is a pretty obvious thud and it started from small (once in a while), to every single time. Did excessive research on this forum and all over the internet. I can't tell if it's driveline or motor mounts/transmission mounts, or both. The carrier bearing is 2 years old and doesnt have a lot of play in it. I can't find a single video of someone posting a check on the motor mounts or the transmission mounts. Just people replacing them with no diagnosis. I realize this is fairly common sense on the mounts, but does anyone have a video they can share on thier checking and finding of bad motor or transmission mounts??? Or have an idea what would cause this??

Not sure how to help, but suggest editing your thread title to specify what you’re looking for. That way people who know how to help will chime in, and nobody will think you’re stuck off-road in some life-threatening situation.

Have you removed the drive shaft and checked the universal joints and yokes?

I appreciate the advice. First time posting in here. Sadly it doesn't seem to allow you to update the title.

2 of the ujoints were replaced less than two years ago as well as the carrier bearing, the front is the only ujoint that hasnt been replaced (long story). The carrier bearing was installed backwards (not my doing) and I do not mean 180' out, I mean facing the wrong direction so Im assuming as there is a F on one side of the bracket, I will try to post a picture. I let it ride that way, didn't seem to be causing any issues, now I'm having 2nd thoughts on that. The leaf spring recall was done and the bolts are torqued. I want to pull the driveshaft today, but don't have a 2nd vehicle to get parts (wife is at work). So no, I haven't yet checked the yokes quite yet. 20250603_112156.jpg

A 2005 that the front universal joint that hasn't been replaced along with the other two.... That is where I would suspect an issue, but it could still be any or all of the joints and or carrier bearing.

Do you know if the front joint has ever been replaced or if it is the original?

I would also inspect the frame mounts for the engine mounts, they have been known to break loose due to crappy welds. give them a look.

I do not know if the other one was replaced. I think I'm going to pull the driveshaft and replace the other U-joint, along with the carrier bearing and grease the splines. Off topic, put the truck in neutral, jacked up the rear end and spun the driveshaft and there is an audible clacking noise, that I will post that sounds like a penny bouncing around in the transmission, just above the oil pan on the right side. The carrier bearing is also squeaking some. You can hear the carrier bearing in the video as well...Now I'm really concerned...Transmission clacking. It won't let me upload a video so I'll just post a picture of the location of the sounds...picture isn't the greatest, but it's where I'm pointing to just above the transmission pan on the right side.

And yes, I know I do not have lower O2 sensors...Don't judge me...Prior owner put an exhaust on and there were no holes made or upper O2's installed. I let it eat, just poor gas mileage.

Why can't you post a video on here? That's sort of critical for people helping with a diagnosis

If you live in the Rust Belt and from the photo you posted in #6, I'd do what Jimmyh said, look over the frame. The surface area around the carrier bearing and the drive shaft surface gives me the impression that there could be more going on than we can see.

Turns out brother that you were right. Little to no play in the U-joints. Carrier bearing makes a little noise but, not enough play and hasn't entirely failed. Started inspecting the engine mounts at the frame...Sure as shit, worse case scenario...Drivers side frame mount weld failed at the bottom. Just to be clear, I don't off road my truck or put heavy use on it. I can't speak for the previous owner, I traded for it. I can push up and down on the frame mount and visually see movement at the frame mount...I'm pretty screwed I think

No, depending on the condition of the frame and if there's a shop near you that is willing to take it on if you can't DIY.

This is the solution to a broken frame mount. Get a Gusset kit and have it installed welded in place. Not cheap but cheaper than a new truck and as long as the remainder of the truck is in good shape it may be worth it.

Sorry about the frame. I wish you the best of luck.

First I want to say that you guys are awesome man. This forum is awesome. It's not what I wanted to run into, but at least now I know what is wrong. Maybe there is a driveline issue as well, but I can't chase it until this mount is fixed regardless. I said I was screwed bc I was concerned about what I would have to pull to have enough clearance to weld it. My best friend is a boiler maker and an outstanding welder, I facetimed him, he said he can tackle it, won't be fun but, can be done as it sits. I'll probably buy the gusset kit. Any idea what the sound in the transmission could be? Did you guys see that part of the thread? I tried to upload a video of it, couldn't do it just a picture.

Its not fun if its a 4wd. but doable. I was getting a popping noise, hard accel and braking when i first found the issue around 2007. Fixed about a dozen of them in the years after. I wasnt gonna let the monkeys at toyota replace my frame...

    Get the MM fixed first.

If the other noise persists, you could take the rear driveshaft out entirely and drive around town in 4Hi (front wheel drive only). That will rule out a lot right there

Can you actually do this? Or are you being funny? I feel rather dumb for asking
