Do the front axles and front driveshaft turn when in 2 wheel drive? In other words do they always turn? If so, than is the only connect/disconnect at the transfer case?

No, only when engaged in 4WD.

The front axles turn when you're in 2wd, the drive shaft can be spinning while in 2wd but it is not turning under power, just from friction from things around it spinning.

When you put the truck in 4wd, the transfer case engages 4wd and there is also a sleeve within the front differential that engages as well.

The only way they wouldn't spin is with manual hubs. With add they are always rotating with the front wheels and are fixed in the hubs. Like Pugga said they are engaged in the front diff with a sleeve when 4wd is selected.
