    Sure, it can be done. But you'll never look as cool as the chick that I saw driving a 60's Falcon the other day. She pulls off the stoplight, reaches up and shifts the "three on the tree" into second. I fell in love!

    OP, bonus points if you know what a "three on the tree" is. I'm twice your age and I've only driven one once.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but by shifting "like a manual" enough times will damage the torque converter? How do I know this? I did it with my first auto trying to be the Fast and the Furious.
    OP: just use it as needed for engine braking. When I wheel and am going down steep hill I tend to keep it in lower gears.

    That is generally a no-no. The shifter linkage going from the column to the transmission is a lot more flexible.
