What is the consensus on using the "manual" gear box, the 4, 3, and 2 gear on our automatic transmissions? It feels good to drop it down into 3 when you have a truck full of people and gear. It's so much more torque'y and flows higher into the gear.

Is it bad for the truck to frequently use? What is exactly happening when you drop it down? Does anyone know a lot about it?

    Thank you!

It just sets the valve body of the transmission so it only uses the first 3 gears. It's not inherently bad for the truck unless you are revving it to the moon going like 70 down the highway. You can keep it in D or 4 and do the same thing just add more throttle so it delays shifting longer you'll just use more fuel. I use L and 2 offroading all the time and take it out of D (which is our OD) and put it in 4 when I am towing. Never really use the 3 under any other type of driving. You need to remember that in 3rd the torque converter won't lock up in D it will and lower trans temps keeping it much happier. Just drive easy when loaded down and don't be in a rush just take your time.
